It's interesting that unlike the first FF omnibus, the first JB MU Omnibus does not state that it is volume one. Could it be that a second volume was not intended until after sales exceeded expectations? Speculation on my part but this has to be a good thing.

Q for anyone: Where is the art for this cover from?

I think I see a sneaky "Simonson" signature in there and it reads to my eye like
Simonson pencils inked by someone else. But when I try to imagine that
"someone else" is "John Byrne", I just don't believe it. I don't recognize the
story, but imagine it must be from a JB comic in the collection here, right?

That's from Marvel Two-In-One #43

Byrne/Simonson with different coloring.

When they too the corner box out, they took the “Byrne” out too.

They just don't make covers like that anymore. The Thing
is down, Cap is on the ropes, and whose side is Man-Thing
on?

You can still see the bottom bits of the letters. Just barely.

Wow!

Thanks! It's kind of neat to have these old eyes tricked like that. I never would
have come around to those being JB pencils and Simonson inks if I was left to
figure it out myself.

I;m really excited for this book - I loved the first one and it is great to see some familiar work, and some that I missed!

I just wish Marvel would comission JB to do new cover artwork.

••

Along those lines, DC has elected one of my Batman commissions to use as a cover.

That TWO-IN-ONE cover has a story behind it, which some of you have heard before.

After I tried to make an X-MEN cover more dynamic than the sketch I'd been sent, Shooter thundered from on high that I must NEVER, EVER change the sketch. Just draw what I was given.

Not long after, I was sent a sketch for that MTIO cover, which was really DULL. But, in no mood to get chewed out again, I drew it exactly as it was.

A few weeks later I visited the Marvel office, and Shooter proudly showed me the inked version -- where Walt had made all the changes I would have made to juice it up. "Simonson really saved your ass!" Shooter declared.

Amazon shows this with a release date of December 18 but it's available now at www.instocktrades.com for $62.50 (50% off) and free shipping.  It's a "Deal of the week" so that price will be good until mid-day Tuesday (or while supplies last).

I'm looking forward to receiving this one.  Over 50 JB comics, all in one collection!  I still hold out hope for JB Spider-Man and She-Hulk Omnibus collections!

In non-Marvel related news, I noticed on Amazon that the third JB Wonder Woman hardcover is scheduled for August, which will finish out that run.
