106 years ago, the Titanic sank on her maiden voyage.

Never fails to shock me when I read about that disaster.
Some have claimed it was said to be unsinkable, but one article I read claimed such statements are apocryphal.

The "unsinkable" claim seems to have attached after the disaster, along with the "criminal" shortage of lifeboats.

I've always been a questioning soul. The "unsinkable" claim did sound a tad wild. Some articles do proclaim it to be truth, but a lot more have contested it.

Getting most of the band together and playing during, what must have become, total chaos still strikes me as incredible.
I prefer A NIGHT TO REMEMBER over all other attempts to put the incident to film.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is the best -- as well as a lesson in the excesses of Cameron's TITANIC.

My friend bought me A NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Still haven't watched it. Need to put it at the front of my "queue" soon.

I showed A NIGHT TO REMEMBER to a friend some years ago, and she was surprised when, all of twenty minutes in, the ship hit the iceberg. "Yes," said I. "This is a movie about the sinking of the Titanic, not the adventures of imaginary characters!"

Many of the dead from the Titanic are buried just a few miles from where I live.
One of the more remarkable stories from the Titanic is one of its crew members survived not just its sinking, but also the sinking of its sister ship The Britannic in 1916 and a collision with a warship in Titanic's other sister ship The Olympic in 1911. LINK to his story.

Recommended reading for those interested: Two books by Walter Lord --
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER THE NIGHT LIVES ON
Both extraordinarily well researched tomes on the sinking of the great ship.

I met Walter Lord several decades ago. He lived in the same Manhattan apartment building as a friend, who introduced us in an elevator. I thanked him for A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, and never saw him again!

That's troublesome enough, but what made it far worse for me is that Cameron had his imaginary characters be indirectly responsible for the Titanic hitting the iceberg in the first place!
