FULL METAL JACKET is a favorite of mine. Ermey was
certainly enjoyable to watch on screen.

Ah, this one makes me sad. He was always fun to watch, even in lousy movies (the Texas Chainsaw remake, Saving Silverman.)

What a life, though!

Sad news. I was watching the opening to Full Metal Jacket just the other day, frightening and hilarious at the same time.  The fact that much of Hartman's dialogue was ad libbed speak volumes as to Ermey's talent.

Full Metal Jacket came out right after I got out of boot camp, so it was actually fun to watch all those years ago. Ermey was the star as far as I was concerned. 74 is too young to go, and didn't he say Marines are not allowed to die without permission?

RIP and Semper Fi.

Must have seen him in several minor parts, but his role in FULL METAL JACKET stands out. It's a magnetic performance.

Sad to hear he's passed.

I heard him on a podcast telling his life story and he had a really wacky life.  After the Vietnam war he stayed in SE Asia and became a pimp for a while.  Just some crazy stuff.

I wished he had done more roles like his police captain in Seven, but he often got cast as variants on Sgt. Hartman.
