Octopi

Allowing that popular theory holds that all life on earth evolved from a SINGLE CELL in the primordial sea, before we invoke aliens to explain octopi, shouldn't we consider that maybe there was a SECOND cell?

It's an intriguing possibility, and if the facts (both ways) support a hypothesis, then it's worth consideration. We don't know everything - we barely know ANYTHING - and as has been noted, not only is the universe stranger than we know, it's stranger than we can know. Maybe our eighth or ninth generation of descendants will have a glimmer.

And on the lighter side, some days I FEEL like an alien. And with what's going on among the humans in Washington, some days I wish I WERE an alien.

I remember something about bananas/plantains being 'alien' to other known fruit, one of those Charles Fort sorts of oddities information I've never been able to find enough more about to know what to make of. Perhaps Phil Dick told me all I really need to know in that The Blue Cephalopod Man is from Titan. :^)

We are probably like a polynesian island in space where various 'seeds' scattered by the cosmic winds find purchase (comets, meteors)... maybe The Blob wasn't so fictitious after all.

They’re also the atheist’s nightmare!

Bananas have been cultivated and hybridized by humans for years, resulting in a sterile fruit that is more ideal for human consumption. People unaware of the history of the banana use it to make wild claims like bananas were designed by God as food or that they are aliens among other types of fruit.

IIRC, in Polynesian myth, Octopuses are the last survivors of the universe before this one.

Like Galactus.

One thing worth bearing in mind: there have been mass extinctions throughout the Earth's history. Entire branches of flora and fauna have been extinguished, huge swathes of evolutionary output have been erased. Between the dinosaur extinction, the ice ages, and more, it's possible that vastly more genes have been killed off than survived to the present day.

So it isn't beyond reason to think that some tiny vestiges of these extinct genetic lines endure in the form of strange creatures like octopi. It's not as though octopi don't have DNA, after all--it's just not what we see in just about every other living organism that's alive now.

It's all speculation, we will never know the true origin of our planet or the Universe.  But I enjoy listening to all of the theories.  I am addicted to "Ancient Aliens" & "The Universe"  History Channel tv shows.
