This makes me recall INHERIT THE WIND:

We must not abandon faith! Faith is the most important thing!

Then why did God plague us with the capacity to think? Mr. Brady, why do you deny the one thing that sets above the other animals?..... What other merit have we?.... The elephant is larger, the horse stronger and swifter,.... the butterfly more beautiful, ....the mosquito more prolific, .....even the sponge is more durable...... Or does a sponge think?

I don't know. I'm a man, not a sponge!

Do you think a sponge thinks?

If the Lord wishes a sponge to think, it thinks!

Does a man have the same privilege as a sponge?

Of course!

Then this man wishes to have the same privilege of a sponge, he wishes to think!

While today we understand much better that the capacity for thought is hardly as exclusive to humans as we've told ourselves for thousands of years, it's still harrowing to consider how rarely, as a species, we've used that privilege as caretakers rather than tyrants.

I'm not certain that destroying only ten percent of life forms counts as driving them to destruction, unless our entire bio mass is considered as one big mass, and that 10% is directed at certain species to wipe them out. TLDR: When will the English learn to speak English? "Why, in America, they haven't used it for years."

This is horrific, but it is a problem that will solve itself. As George Carlin noted, Earth'll be just fine. Mankind may have a problem, though...

Still, we have groups and agencies working hard to preserve near-extinct species, trying to salvage polluted eco-systems and trying to make things cleaner. A lot of humans KNOW that there is a problem, and are trying to fix it.

I just dread that we're not the top of the ladder, and the next, superior, race does to us what we've done to passenger pigeons, for example.

Our problem has never been ending all life on Earth. Even if we nuked the planet, something somewhere would survive and eventually the biosphere would flourish again.

Our problem is making Earth nonviable for human life. And that we seem well on track to achieving.

Many times in Earth's history, species have been wiped out by natural disasters. This time, the natural disaster is US!
