The only way I'd ever watch this is if someone spoils the ending, and its a pure 10 minutes of Batman showing up and beating him to a bloody pulp. And by `watch', I mean I'd fast forward to that part.

Is this movie necessary? No.

Does it look interesting? Yes.

Will I see it? Also yes.

Matt R., this post also points out a very important element.

There NEEDS to be a Batman* to counter the Joker, and to STOP HIM. For whatever reason he's a psychopathic villain, he kills people. And we need Batman to STOP HIM FROM KILLING, however sympathetic his character is.

*Unless you're talking about the WB, in which case you need Green Arrow to be Batman. Which he's been pretty well...

I wonder how Rachel Miller feels about Taxi Driver.  Or Heathers in an era after dozens of school shootings.  Or Falling Down.  Or Dog Day Afternoon.  I could go on.

We have a horrible societal problem.  Is the best thing to do really to not talk about it?  To not portray it in art?  Would that really help toward a solution?

Aspiring mass murderers will find any reason to do what they do. So I don't object to a Joker movie. Unless it ends with the Joker becoming President. We have had enough psychotic clowns in the White House.

Joe Z. - "Aspiring mass murderers will find any reason to do what they do."

Of course they will. 90% of '80s teen horror films were about this. :)

But there's far more involved than just a story about a mass murderer here. Or to put it bluntly... what if this mass murderer were called Spider-Man? Fixated on watching spiders in his cell weaving webs and then tearing them down and then weaving them and then tearing them down, ad absurdum? This might be such a story as "Joker" appears to be.

Seems like Rachel has a lot of opinions on a movie she hasn't seen.

There's also this weird "I don't want to" thing, confusing a movie being out with being forced to see it, feel sympathy for the character and find it relatable among other things at gunpoint.

Strange times we're living in.

Travis Bickle wasn't portrayed as a comic book villain for 80 years.

I could post here, with little effort, an array of comic book panels of the Joker committing atrocious acts of violence that I'm sure no Hollywood movie would dare reproduce.

Perhaps we, as comic book fans, should look inward for once instead of blaming it all on "those hacks from Hollywood". But hey, that's hard.

Rodrigo,
You have reasons that you want to see the movie. Others do not. There is no right or wrong answer here.
