Ditko had every opportunity to cash in on being the co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange and chose not too.  We should just let it go at that.

Can't speak to Ditko's mindset, but reportedly his reasons for not wanting to do more Spider-Man or Doctor Strange when he returned to Marvel in the 70s was a lack of interest in competing with his own legend. That's not something he would have to worry about now.

If he left instructions to whoever to destroy them, then his wishes should be honored. It's also possible that he destroyed them himself at some point over the years. But if neither of those situations are true, it would be nice to see the stories.

He and Robin Snyder just completed a Kickstarter for a new book (fortunately, work had already been completed, and I believe there are one or two more he's finished). I'm surprised Robin Snyder hasn't said anything there yet.

The giveaway is the human characters. For the Transformers themselves, Ditko clearly just copied from a mix of the toys’ painted box art and the Sunbow cartoon’s character animation models.

Honestly, Greg, most of those Transformers definitely have "Ditko-isms" to how they look. A good giveaway with Ditko are the hands. Ditko certainly would have used reference, but he also certainly did more than copy animation models.

Oh, there are Ditko-isms, to be sure, but some of the character poses are copied pretty directly from both the animation models and the toy boxart, which I’m very familiar with. However, the majority of the drawings are indeed new poses which merely rely on the models as models, for consistency’s sake. Though I know not why Bumblebee only has one arm!

Anyway, I haven’t really researched Ditko’s more obscure works. I’m sure there’s some interesting stuff out there. Although I’d be more interested in checking out his creator-owned output of the past 20 or so years, which would provide some interesting insights into his worldview during his golden years.

Greg (and everyone else), I definitely encourage you to
reach out to Robin Snyder and order up a sampling of the
creator owned work he and Ditko published together.
Intriguing stuff and it's still rolling along...

My wife woke me up to that news on Saturday morning.

Ditko was a singular figure, a founding father of the Marvel universe but a generator of characters and concepts far beyond the House of Ideas. The Question, the Creeper, Hawk and Dove... his creations were far-ranging and found enduring fans across decades.

How do you memorialize a man like that?

Still feeling off-kilter from Harlan Ellison's death, and then this happens.

RIP, Mr. Ditko, and thank you.
