University Acceptance Facilitator. That's what it feels like sometimes.

I teach senior Physics, Calculus, Math and Computer Science at a private school in Macau.

Steven, I've seen parents complaining at my daughter's school because their kids got bad grades in arts.

When I was a kid, arts was pretty much drawing and painting stuff only, not much knowledge behind it. Now for instance they have art history and have to take tests about it. My daughter usually does great because that's her #1 passion.

So, I see evolution where other parents find absurdity. It makes me sad.

Biggest misconception: an Art Teacher just does fun projects with the students, and doesn't teach anything. Mostly, they have Art so the real teachers can get a break.

Trust me, I know that Art teachers do more than just fun stuff, Steven! Whenever I have a student bring me a test or assignment (read the test, allow extended time, etc.,), I feel like I'M learning about art as well!

Biggest misconception about my job: The students can't learn. We modify work and accommodate disabilities and teach strategies to help them after graduation. I teach mostly Social Studies classes and I tell parents that I don't expect them to come home and tell them all about the Byzantine Empire but hopefully, they can spell it (and using the skills they've learned, spell and sound out other multi-syllable words).

I'm a captain for the Washington State Ferries in the San Juan Islands. I'm starting my 26th year with the WSF. It's hell, but someone has to do it.

Probably the biggest misconception I get is that people think I drive the boat. I tell them no, it's more like I'm Captain Kirk in that I'm responsible for the safety of the whole ship. I do take the navigation watches on all the westbound sailings in addition to all my other responsibilities.
