but my head-shake moment was discovering that people make a living opening things on Youtube - "unboxing" videos. Just, wow.

Trevor - This is a great example. I think the most mind boggling revelation is that there are SO many people more interested in a stranger's life than they are of their own lives.
For me, I've only just recently come to terms that the world is a lot crazier then I ever gave it credit.....and maybe I'm the odd man out...;-)
But wait....I come to a forum every day to read what strangers have to say........hm.......

I witnessed a very average youtuber, with around 60k followers, make a few hundred dollars in an hour by super chat donations.
There were only 800 to 1200 followers watching too, not 60k.

Imagine living your life 12 hours a day performing for an audience that if you deny them their desires for an instant, can destroy your income. It's a nightmare.

I live my life working 12 hours a day (sometimes) performing for an audience (my clients) that if i deny them their desires in an instant (performance and results), can destroy my income. It's a nightmare.
Sounds like a real job, with real stress. How they choose to handle that stress and balance their lives is the real issue.
I completely agree btw, that being a successful YouTuber and maintaining your market share is a huge amount of work. You have to OWN your own business and manage your brand.

Thomas - you hit the other phenomenon - how loyal followers are willing to throw money so quickly at their favorite stars.

My real job requires 8 hours a day and because I have an employer and live in a place with strong labor laws, I cannot lose my income over a fit of pique. I am not a dancing monkey ordered to please the king.
I have no fears of making my clients mad when they ask me to do something stupid and I explain why I won't.
My performance review is a perfunctory quarterly process that has no impact on my career rather than a raise.
I am paid overtime when I work more than 40 hours a week. I have my personal privacy and have the ability to deny work that might intrude into my personal time.
I am not controlled by my audience of clients and nor do I live in fear of their disapproval. I am also not 25.
I feel like those who think being a streamer is the easy life should give it a shot before they deny these people sympathy.

I'm not trying to say it is a bad thing. If they can pull it off, great. I was just saying for those who go though a much harder ordeal to get a similar pay could be annoyed by it.

Going of at a slight tangent (sorry) but seeing Social Justice Warrior written out in full rather than abbreviated to SJW suddenly made me think how odd it is that the term is used pejoratively. You'd think fighting for justice in society would be a good thing - isn't that what Superman does after all?
-----
Social Justice Warrior used to be a positive term. On the internet, it became a pejorative for a certain type of internet armchair quarterback on social issues who possessed a very shallow understanding of the issue they were espousing. The implication being that the person really didn't care about the issue and was just using the stance to claim moral superiority over others, and by doing so, drowning out the voices of /real/ activists.
During the GamerGate brouhaha, the term was co-opted by what later became the alt-Right to dismiss /anyone/ who argued for a progressive or inclusive stance. So anyone using SJW with that connotation is adopting their agitprop.

I knew about Twitch but never really engaged it until last year when "Friday the 13th: The Game" came out. I'm not much of a gamer but I'm a horror fan so I got the game and enjoyed it. I also wasn't great at it so I did jump first onto YouTube to find videos of tips, then started seeing some people posting videos of them playing, which I also ended up watching and enjoying.
I watched a couple live streams of streamers even and it was a fun way to distract me for a month or two. No different than watching TV, I guess.
I'm not a big enough gamer to really keep up with it, but I did send one of the streamers a few bucks, since I'd watched him play for a month or so and I could afford $5 pretty easily.

And this is why I try my damndest not to judge! I pause for a moment and think about how strange MY parents find some of the things I do/have done!

Then there is Twitter which is an identity politics dumpster fire. You are either a Social Justice Warrior demanding people identify you by your preferred pronoun or you are an Alt-Right Facist Nazi.----------------------------------------------- You should jump over to Wil Weaton's blog and read his last couple of posts about how horrible Twitter can be.

Twitter is the platform I understand the LEAST.
Facebook is good for interacting with your audience. Instagram is good for promoting your visuals.
But Twitter, while made specifically for the impulsive, smartphone addict, just doesn't make sense to me. It seems to be a bunch of one-side comments, a garble of incoherent hyper-rants. I freely admit I'm just the old man here, not getting this new fangled technology.

Apparently the actress playing Batwoman in the new Arrowverse series has left Twitter after fan backlash.
