I might mention that one of the things I really dislike about the Sandman is the way he was turned into a big goof by later writers -- evidently those who forgot he was once on the FBI's Most Wanted list. When I was working on CHAPTER ONE, I called the FBI and, after identifying myself, asked what it took to get on that list. Mass murder and child killing, for a start.

Not the kind of guy you want chumming around with Spider-Man in a Xmas issue!!!

Some heroes and weaknesses of the Sandman popped to mined.

Banshee, Songbird, Dazzler, etc. WEAKNESS: Sandman still uses physical senses, so powers that affect those would affect him just fine. The Purple Man would probably take him in straight sets.

Professor X, Phoenix, White Queen, Moondragon, etc would crumble his mind and mental defenses in seconds. WEAKNESS: No resistance to mental powers in the least.

Thor, the Human Torch, Storm, Living LIghtning, etc. could fuse him into solid glass. WEAKNESS: That body of sand has a drawback or two (although to be fair, Sandy could still take more damage than, say, the Chameleon or the Vulture.)

Invisible Woman, Iceman, Justice, etc. would be able to contain him in a field so tight that he wouldn't be able to move his molecules at all. WEAKNESS: A beach sand bucket with a tight lid could probably hold his particulate form. :)

Sandman is indeed a formidable foe, but as most every super powered individual do, he has his weaknesses.

EDIT: How does Wolverine beat the Sandman? Tough one. The only thing I could think of is for Wolverine to make him stay in his sand form to the maximum time he can do it, and I don't know if any such time limit has been established. Otherwise... if this is set up in advance in a mountainous or (high) hill setting, maybe grab a sackful of Sandman and dump it over a high cliff, dispersing it. Doing this a few times might diminish Sandman's ability to reform or retain control. Maybe...

Like we say around here, a good writer....

For those who would encase Sandman be careful to vacuum all of him up.
I assume he can control all of his sand particles, leave any strays and he could create a sand needle and go right for the eyes.

Thor has control over the weather, so I imagine some wind and rain could do some damage to Sandman. A lighting strike or a thunder clap might hurt Mister Marko, too.

Are current writers still clinging to the 'mother grain' theory of how the Sandman's powers work?

ie. One single grain contains the entirety of William Baker's consciousness and is able to psychokinetically control grains of regular sand around them.   Isolate or attack the mother grain and you defeat the Sandman.

Kind of a sad commentary on fans-turned-pro if you ask me.  Did we really need to know the man behind the curtain wasn't wearing pants?  Really?

I don't know what it means, Rob, but I won't judge anyone who has raised it here, I don't know enough about it.
