Check it out! Josef Rubinstein took a crack at this one!

Maybe he'll take a crack at some of those beautiful ELSEWHEN pencils next!

I think it comes down to desired effect. I
personally always want to see JB's pencils
shine through. Some, may not care and just
want an enjoyable package. Those people are
getting a very high quality comic. Sinnott
is also very heavy handed. He makes
everyone look like Sinnott. But if Sinnott
inked your book, its going to look great.
Its just going to look like Joe.

Something just hit me. I wonder what Image
inker, Scott Williams inks looks like over
JB's pencils?

Make mine, Rubinstein! (I do prefer Palmer’s handling of the board
though.)

Stephen, he inked a few JB pages on UXM back when Jim Lee was pencilling. Looked rather nice, I thought.

BTW Rubinstein might be stopping by to see this thread -- I mentioned to him on Facebook that I posted the piece here.

I believe this piece is a commission. Very cool piece to own!

Hello! I am a Spanish fan and since I saw the original pencils of John Byrne for that cover, I wanted to produce, as a personal exercise, an edition of the cover trying to be more faithful to the pencils of what Tom Palmer was.
Since I'm just an amateur, I opted for an inking in pure B & W without adding textures, to reinforce the classic look while also coloring avoiding Photoshop effects.
Obviously I do not have the skills of professional inkers, so I beg you to be lenient with the result  ;)
Done with all the respect and admiration for the work of John Byrne, I hope you like it. Greetings from Spain!

I recently bought this one-shot and read it for the first time. Enjoyed it quite a bit, but, yeah, the inks do overpower the pencils.

I love it now but when it first came out I so wanted Terry Austin to ink a John Byrne Silver Surfer comic!

Alfredo, judging you as you ask (which is, not a pro standard), I would say I quite like the central figure of the Surfer, with the exception of the right hand -- I think there you have lost the anatomical accuracy which was in JB's pencils.

I can see you have put a lot of work into the backgrounds, but at first glance I don't think this is apparent. I think the cosmic background would have benefitted from following suit from the Palmer and Rubinstein versions with bold white stars. Your white dots are subtle to the point that, in places, they look like imperfections in what is intended to be a uniform black space.

I do like how faithful you kept the Surfer's face to the pencils.

Reflection lines on the board are missing, which I though was a simple yet effective detail in the pencils.

Finally, I think you should have stayed faithful to the lighting JB used for the foreground rock (i.e. shadow on top and lit from beneath). The lack of spotted blacks on the rock leaves it looking flat, almost like something intended for a colouring book.

Oh man.  I LOVE these pencils.

I wish the original face had not been destroyed.

And the Silver Surfer does not need all those muscles that Palmer added.  He has the POWER COSMIC!

John Byrne did it right.

I loved this single shot issue, but I have always felt that the inks overpowered the beauty of what the pencils must have been like because I only seen Byrne greatness shine through about half the time.  The rest of the time it looks like Palmer embellished.
