The first one I did. That was drawn in a motel coincidentally across the street from the SAIT campus (home in my day of the Alberta College of Art).

Regarding the balcony story, Roger Stern had come to Calgary with the
make ready of issue 114 and you read the confrontation between
Cyclops and Storm over his reaction to Jean’s “death”. Enraged by
Chris Claremont’s rewriting of the scene you were tempted to throw it
off the balcony. Tempted being the operative word.

Spent a Christmas in Calgary back in '98, as my girlfriend was from there. Nice city, but damn it was cold!

But it's a dry cold!Oft Told Tale: One morning, after Canada switched to metric, I was riding down in the elevator in that very building, and a couple of Yuppie guys were also in the car. One of them commented that it was 40 below outside. Yeah, said the other, but that's centigrade. So they were both okay, and headed out into... 40 below, which is the same on both scales.

It was, until that brown building went up across the street! Then my view of the Rockies was reduced to only what I could see down the canyon of buildings to the right (straight ahead in this picture). Downtown Calgary, my view to the left, was less inspiring in those days. Incidentally, just down the street you can see one of the elevated walkways (called Plus 15s) that interconnect much of the downtown. A boon during those cold winters. My Dad, when he was with the City Government, pushed for their installation. Succesfully, obviously!

Plus 15s are now at 59 bridges and 16 km (10 miles) of walkway.
I might have liked Calgary more if the network had been in place when I worked downtown those many years ago.

Curious to see but sorry, that building looks like a parkade crossed with a hospital tower to me. It'd keep you from being distracted by anything outside the drawing paper though, I can imagine that much for it. Looks like the place for people who don't want to see a lot of trees maybe? :^|
The Calgary Sun newspaper alone would keep me from living there, from being trapped there during some record flooding that put the Saddledome underwater and I thought Fox News had become two dimensional! And a bloody Page 3 'girl' to boot... there went my pure and sane idealization of Canada. :^)
A grid system of streets, very logical I was told... except for exceptions, things named Trail this and that which zigzag all around with ways of getting on and off known only to locals. Maybe some taxi drivers got together and invented them! Ha. :^)
I would live in Jasper, Alberta though, most beautiful place I have ever seen! I thought I'd wandered into the old book Heidi!

Now, the view of the mountains appears to be completely obscured by the adjacent buildings.
John's old apartment building has the red arrow.
