Poking around on Google Maps, and once again found myself "standing" outside the apartment building where all but one issue of UNCANNY X-MEN was drawn. My first issue of FF was started there, too.

Oh, those lonely years!

For those not in the know, Calgary received a foot of snow last week. Not a happy city at the moment.

Could that be the balcony from which a certain page of X-Men art was thrown in angry reaction to the scripting?

I told someone once that if I could have a second home, it'd be in either Toronto or Calgary (I've never been to Canada - one day! - but I like the look of those cities).

Literally thrown off the balcony? Ha! I have no memory of that story!

JB: What now?

***

Not a very promising reaction, so I will stipulate this could be something my mind made up or conflated, but seeing that picture of a balcony immediately brought a memory to mind that I thought I got from an interview. So here's my unverified recollection: There was a time you had worked out a scene with your co-plotter on X-Men and you had drawn it as conceived, but the first time you saw how the scene would appear in print was when the page of art was returned to you with lettering on it. You instantly saw the new version not only erased the original intent, but created a new moment which you would never have agreed to and you threw the page off the balcony which you happened to be on.

I feel like I'm repeating what I read pretty faithfully, but considering the reaction it's provoked, I'm wishing I had the source of this memory on hand -- whatever that source is!

First, Marvel’s artwork return was nowhere near that fast. The only way I could have seen a lettered page before I saw the published book would have been if I’d been visiting the Offices in NYC, so no opportunity for balcony hurling.

Second, it would have been crazy to throw something so immediately traceable to me into a street full of traffic. Who knows what kind of accidents that might have caused!

Wow! Sorry about that. I hope it seems as innocent as it feels-- I had that story in my head somehow and seeing this thread made the whole thing drop onto my mental desktop like any real memory would.

Erase! Erase!

As one who has vivid memories of the Blitz — which happened ten years before I was born — I fully understand.

I understand if this is not in the memory bank (I can barely remember yesterday), but can you remember which issue was NOT drawn there?
