I had a discussion with a guy recently who said that word/thought balloons, taglines and other wording ruins comic covers.

I don't see that, myself, certainly not based on the many classic covers I've seen.

When I was buying comics around 1967 (Yeah, I'm old), one of the distinctions between Marvel and DC was that Marvel covers (with rare exceptions) did not have word balloons on their covers, whereas DC almost always did.  I always felt that the Marvel Covers looked more like posters (esp. Amazing Spider-Man 49, as a memorable example).

An editor at Marvel once notoriously called a book back from the printer in order to add a comma to the cover copy.

I have two side-by-side Neal Adams pages with Ra’s, Batman, and a retelling of the origins of Batman and Robin. A prize in my collection.

(That said, I would happily trade both for the “Bat boo” page!)
