First, purchased while visiting my grandparents one summer in Lincoln, Nebraska.  Giordano sucked me in, no problem.

Oldest non-reprint.

Mr. Byrne, in re: JLA #67 - you are certainly right that showing Wonder Woman resting on the hoop was a disservice to her character and abilities, and there are a couple other things that bugged me about that cover.

Of all the heroes, Superman, Wonder Woman, and J'onn have super strength... so why is Batman struggling holding it? (Even if Manhunter from Mars was no longer involved in JLA stories.) And even acknowledging the Bat-mania of the time... surely putting Batman front, top, and center could have given that service!

The perspective is all wrong. Superman, Batman, and the Atom, Green Arrow, and Hawkman are in one pretty straight perspective. GL kinda works... but what are Flash and Aquaman standing on ? And how did the Atom fit through that ring?

I know it's just a cover, it's just there to sell the comic, and it's by brand new super star Neal Adams. But I'd like it to look close to right, and this just looked close to wrong to me.

TANGENT: Goodness me, there seems to be a lot of Jim Aparo covers here. How nice! I wish there more of Mr. Byrne's work... but as we know, while he loves Batman, he just didn't do all that many Batman stories. (Still, I'll bet somebody's first book was a Generations title...)

As much of a huge fan I was of the Adam West TV show, and of Super Friends, I wasn't much of DC reader as I got into comics. I was very pro-Marvel, and my favorite character was the Hulk, so, it took this to get me to buy my first Batman book:

The oldest issue I bought, I believe I found at a flea market for a buck. This isn't my copy, but the condition is about the same:

The first Batman I had (bought by my Mother, most likely) was this one:

I do believe that the oldest one I have is this one, though it's in pretty rough shape.  I likely got it for $0.05 at a used book store.: I've liked Batman, but I've generally been content to read older stories through reprints rather than seeking out the actual issues.

I cannot remember the first issue of Batman/Detective I purchased, but I know it spoiled me for other books since it had great Jim Aparo art.

I got in with the 50th anniversary and the Batmania around the summer movie release. Picked these two up at my local pharmacy in the spring of '89:

This has been a great topic, and I think Mr Reis should do the same for other heroes (if he wants to, of course).

The day I decided to 'collect' comics, I went to the
news stand and bought my first two Batman comics, though
I'm not sure which one came out first. They were both
there when I got there (along with G. I. Joe #11, Green
Arrow #1, and the Galactus origin issue ((Super Villain
Classics?)) and Marvel Universe #5 I think).
