G.I. Joe for me, too. I picked this up after watching the cartoon series, and picked this one up. Even better, it was an anniversary issue, and I bought it from that point on until it ended in 1994 (and then went back issue hunting)

I read The 'Nam when it first came out. That really was a great series, but once again one that was ruined by Marvel's editorial decisions to take the series away from what made it, and shove The Punisher in to for no good reason (well...sales).

First story that comes to mind would be a reprint of "The Dummy" from Sgt. Rock that was in the Best of DC Years Best Digest I mentioned in the Batman thread.
For new stories, I'm not sure I'd count GI Joe as a war comic, but if so then #7 would've been my first. Not counting GI Joe, I don't really know WHAT it would've been. Maybe the last issue of Weird War Stories?

I think mine was the first issue of Warlord, published by DC Thomson in September 1974. I remember the character Union Jack Jackson, and Codename: Warlord featuring Lord Peter Flint. There is said to have been a series, perhaps in later issues, named Wolverine about a French-Canadian tank commander with an international crew, with artwork by Mike Dorey, but I don't remember that one.

QUOTE:
Have they ever reprinted that Sgt. Fury #13 story? |
|
|
According to the Grand Comics Database it was reprinted in Special Marvel Edition #11 (minus one page), Sgt. Fury #13 [JC Penney Marvel Vintage Pack from 1994] (also minus one page), Marvel Masterworks: Sgt. Fury #1, Marvel Visionaries: Jack Kirby #2, and Essential Sgt. Fury #1. The JC Penney reprint was one of 15 Marvel issues they reprinted - the others were Amazing Adult Fantasy #13; Amazing Spider-Man Special [Annual] #5; Avengers #88; Captain America #109; Fantastic Four #66 & #67; Incredible Hulk #140; Sub-Mariner #8; Thor Special [Annual] #2; Tomb of Dracula #25; X-Men #28, #62 #63; and Young Men #25. I once picked up a cheap copy of their Sub-Mariner #8 at a comics mart. My heart sank when I opened it to find it included adverts from 1994.

G.I. Combat #128 from 1968 with an outstanding (IMO) Russ Heath cover. I still have my copy.

G. I Joe #11 was the first one I bought, when I started COLLECTING comics, but I'm pretty sure the first one I remember starred the Unknown Soldier.

I never bought a war comic to be honest, but I recall my Dad buying Sgt. Rock when ever he could from the local 7/11.

Colin: Thanks for the info about those modern J C Penney reprints, they seem to be often very highly priced now (unfortunately for me) I saw there was also Fantastic Four #51 and X-Men #60 & 61 reprints.

The first I ever owned was Weird War Tales 51, with a back-up featuring a London populated by dogs being blitzed by a giant firefly, with art by Marshall Rogers. I think I got that one in a trade with my friend Jeff from one block over.
The question here asks what's the first I ever purchased, however, and that would likely be... The Brave and the Bold 146, featuring the Golden Age Batman and the Unknown Soldier!

Does GI JOE really count as a "war" comic? I saw those characters as a more steroidic version of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.

That might be true by the 50th issue (and certainly was by the time it ended), but the early G.I. Joes featured fairly standard war stories.
