what was the first "war" comic you purchased ? Sgt Fury, Sgt Rock, the Charlton generics: Fightin' Army/Navy/Marines ?
i never really gravitated to "war" comics until i saw this ... (at Greive's Drug Store) i liked it (i liked Captain America! i was mostly a Marvel-superhero-guy), but i never bought another Sgt Fury until many, many years later, and then there was Enemy Ace that really made me appreciate Joe Kubert, so there i was in comic shops stocking up on Sgt Rock, Losers, etc.but this was my 1st.

Have they ever reprinted that Sgt. Fury #13 story? I've wanted to read it for a long time. Although I just looked into those late '70s Silver Surfer reprints and the price people are putting on those, sheesh! Way more that the 25cent '60s Fantasy Masterpieces issues that had Golden Age stories reprinted... collectors are nuts!
I got mostly coverless war comics along with everything else in swaps as a kid, couldn't begin to name a first I saw. I remember specific stories more, like one I think was Alex Toth drawn from a Japanese soldier's point of view on some Pacific island. There were some stories that really made you think and curious to know more of the reality. Enemy Ace by Kubert was great of course.

Another "first of" reprint. I sampled Sgt. Rock and whatever Atlas had put out, and I'm sure I read a Haunted Tank story also.

The first "war" comic I can remember buying was G.I.Joe #1 but it's possible I was exposed to an issue of Sgt. Rock before then. It's hard to remember exactly because I have been reading comics since I was very very young and the early years are a bit foggy, lol.

I often mention my older brother's collection and he had a huge run of G.I. Combat that I loved looking at before I could read. Like Christopher, I personally bought G.I. Joe #1 and it was my gateway into buying monthly comics.

An issue of Sgt. Fury in a pack of comics that were mostly sans covers, excepting the Sgt. Fury and an FF comic on the outsides of the pack. I believe it was a reprint of an earlier story. I still have it, but would have to look it up for the number.
I have the Sgt. Fury Essential collection vol.1 GREAT collection!

G.I. Joe, The Nam, and Alien Legion (which I think totally counts, tonally) are the only "war" comics I can think of during my youth. Only got a few issue of The Nam but loved the other two.

Yeah, like Bob above it was probably GI Joe or The Nam. Wasn't exposed to many war comics and wasn't into them. I did enjoy the Enemy Ace / Batman team-up in Detective 404 but that's not a war comic.
