I thought the whole MSHSW was a gimmick, distracting from more interesting (focused) stories while this event got shoehorned in. I recognized that with a "cast" this large, no one was going to get a lot of time.
That said, while the Black Costume was part of it, I did find it pretty interesting pre-Venom.

I thought it was blah. And then it became a villain. When my friends wanted to see the VENOM movie a few weeks ago, I muttered that the poster's tagline should be: "The costume that went bad."

when it came out I was living in a town where comics were hit and miss to find, so I hadn't seen secret wars and I was curious what happened.
Visually I though the black costume was interesting.

This is one of those interesting cases where the redesign was really cool but it's also at odds with the classic look leading to a situation of do we keep the new look or go back to the old one. Personally, I was a fan of the time when he alternated between the two as it gave us the best of both worlds.
Then Venom came along and ruined the whole thing.

I believe the original art for the black costume sketch surfaced a couple of years ago.
I've seen Mike Zeck and Rich Leonardi variously credited for the black costume design though that 'multiple views' sketch screams Leonardi to me -- and I never realized how much the 2099 costume borrows from the black costume (which perhaps isn't surprising since it's also Leonardi's work).
I like the black costume design a lot, it's sleek and understated. It looks like they dropped the red parts of the costume because on newsprint the solid black of the costume tends to look matte compared to everything else, and applying the color on top of complex parts of the costume (like the spider emblem) makes it bleed over the matte black and the effect is less than pleasing.
Then again, they were doing this in the 1960s:

I enjoyed the costume and the stories revolving around it. When I moved on from avid reading, the symbiote was in the jar. I've never actually read a Venom story.

I actually liked Venom. I thought he was a real threat to Spider-Man. It was when Carnage and Doppleganger turned up. That was it for me.

I thought it looked cool with the red. I never liked it black and white. I think the black costume was an attempt to make Spider-Man a "dark" book, which doesn't work well.

I was 11. I saw the cover and was excited and confused and everything in between. I loved it then and I love it now.

As a young teen, it seems that I was probably caught up in the novelty of Spider-Man having a new costume. I was only beginning to discover comic book shops at that point and there wasn't an internet so I didn't really have much outside influence. When Web of Spider-Man #1 hit that seems like the height of the black costume excitement in my world. Wasn't that into Secret Wars. Was aware of it but didn't follow it so #8 wasn't a big part of my life.
"My" Spider-Man was definitely blue and red. My paperback reprints, Mego toys, Remco "Energized" Spider-Man and even a Youth Opportunity Sales Club Decoplauqe wall hanging were all how Spider-Man was imprinted on me and by that point, Spider-Man had no hint of black on his costume.
Did anyone else ever have one of these? They were plastic, smooth on the back but crinkle textured on the front. I want to say they were about 16 inches tall and cut to the outline of the character. I can't find any for sale on ebay so I wonder how rare they are?
