Just a quick one for the forum members: How did you all feel when you first saw Spider-Man in the black costume for the first time? Was there a big uproar about it?
Personally, it didn't bother me. It didn't even register that it was a big deal, I vaguely remember it being quite cool but nothing more than that.

I loved it. I miss the brief period of time where he'd wear the original costume during the day and the black costume at night - that was a good way to keep fans of either costume happy.

I was 11 and I remember seeing that issue at the High's Dairy Store that I bought my comic books at. My first thought was the obvious "That's so cool!" then I saw She-Hulk with the Fantastic Four and the Thing in space and remember thinking that Marvel had changed forever. I do think after a few issues, I was ready for the classic costume to come back. It's funny because around the same time, Marvel Tales was reprinting the Lee/Ditko stories so I guess that why I really didn't miss the original.

I thought it was cool. When I first started collecting, I was fixated on buying a back issue of SECRET WARS #8, but it was always too expensive for me.

I liked it. I didn't think it would ever be a permanent change, but the new suit looked cool and I was good with Peter wearing it for a while.
If it was done today, the internet would be in an uproar. "What the heck are you doing, Marvel, changing an iconic costume like that? Black? He's not a VILLAIN!" and on and on.

Contrast that with the other changes that happened:
- Ben Grimm replaced on the FF by She-Hulk (which was awesome) - the Hulk's leg is broken (lasted all of what, half an issue? did anyone care?) - Iron Man had an upgrade to his armor (not that unusual, and his armor looked more or less like before) - the Avengers were... the same?
Only a couple of real changes came out of SW and all but two of those faded away real fast. So... game changer or not?

Another one that wen over my head. I did take a bit more notice of Iron Man's Silver Centurion costume. I really liked that one!

I thought it was a neat idea. On one hand, it seemed (as I recall) that the X-Men had just upgraded their costumes, so it wasn't a "unique earth-shattering event". On the other hand - Changing Spider-Man's uniform? That actually was kind of a big deal. I thought it looked cool and, while I knew it wouldn't last (gotta hang on to that copyright), it looked like a good idea.
Of course, then it became Venom and I hated it. LOATHED it. Still do, actually.

I don't recall any uproar. In fact, it seemed the opposite. Most of my friends and fans I knew thought it was cool. That said, I am glad the change was not permanent. The classic Spider-Man outfit is still the best.

Given the drastic changes being made to Marvel characters over the past few years, I think a new costume would merit a shrug. Maybe an “Ooo, I want a Funko Pop of that.”

The longest-lasting change due SW was the end of Kitty and Colossus' relationship. About 20 years!
