That guy is obviously not a follower of this forum either as I've seen you compliment plenty of modern comic book artists whose work has been shared here, JB. Frank Cho in particular quite a few times but plenty of others as well. You always seem to be fair in your evaluation of the art whether you like the content of the comic or not.

Once more, the mask of anonymity protects a commenter who wants to make broad, generalized comments with no basis in reality.

In general, if people who made comments had to use their real names and maybe city of origin, we'd likely see a lot less trolling and bashing.

Mr. Byrne is OBVIOUSLY a comics fan - but it's impossible to be a fan of every comic. There aren't enough hours in the day to read every new comic, even if they were worth the time. But he loves them, as he noted.

Rob Liefeld's response to JB's comment above (via twitter):

I tell everyone I offered JB 150k a book to do Supreme. 7 witnesses in my office as he shot me down on speaker phone. Including Image Publisher Eric Stephenson. Did not recruit him as a founding member as all were aware of his being difficult
------------------------------------------------------------ -----------

Last comment is a bit ironic considering how Liefeld was at Marvel before he left for Image.

Rob didn’t mention money. It wouldn’t have mattered if he had.

And I didn’t “shoot him down”, I merely declined his offer to take on SUPREME. But I guess he prefers to have his very own Big Bad Byrne story.

It was Jim Lee who invited me to join Image, which, as noted, they all deny now.

C’est la vie!

Funny, he used to say it was 200k an issue to take over Supreme.

Imaginary money is very elastic.

After all these years, I'm surprised Rob hasn't flipped his story to say I DEMANDED $150/200,000, and that he REFUSED to pay it.

(Oh, now I've done it!)

I still don't understand his problem. Every freelancer says yes to some offers and no to others, him included.

But his "story" used to be that you politely refused and then hung up, not giving him a chance to chat with you.

Also not true—except the polite part.

As I’ve said, there’s no “street cred” in a GOOD Byrne story!

Wow...sorry to stir the pot JB. Was really just curious and never heard the story.

And for the record that is my question quoted on Liefelds Twitter account but not FROM me.  I don't even have an account.

A curious exchange from the comments:

—————

• I collected Alpha Flight for the first 20 or 25 issues.   It sucked.

•• Ehhh why on earth did you Collect them then. Mind boggles!!

• I subscribed.   Then I cancelled.      Me and my friends used to collect comics back then and we figured early issues would be worth something one day. We were wrong.

——————

There’s some hard-to-manage logistics here, since subscriptions were not offered in increments of 20 or 25.

(Also, it’s “my friends and I...”)

From the Comments:

“Byrne says he’s a comics fan, but he’s not.He WAS a comics fan. He hasn’t read any new comics in many years, and he now just complains constantly about what people tell him is happening in comics...”

I didn’t realize being a fan meant having to embrace EVERYTHING.

Anyway, this guy misses the rather important point that I am a fan of the MEDIUM. The FORM, if not always the content.

*****

JB, I find myself at the similar point in regards to comic books. Love the medium, not all the content. (Plus, it's harder to recognize my favorite characters these days.) I sometimes get the same reaction from fans... I'm always complaining or too critical of the books. *sigh*

FYI, so glad you didn't take Liefeld's offer... that guy's a little nutty. :)

-C!

I guess I can’t say I like ice cream, since I don’t care for pistachio.
