Help me, JBF - you're my only hope!
As a kid, I have a half memory of a Superman story I read in which Superman engages in a kind of "Super Olympics", competing against someone who comes from another planet that used to regularly compete against Krypton. With Krypton gone, Superman is his last chance to compete and winner honour for his homeworld.
Both competitors are evenly matched, but when they have an arm wrestle, a machine monitoring them indicates that there's been a microscopic movement AGAINST Superman - so he loses.
Superman then realises that the machine actually registered a burst of radiation (I think) from his competitor, and using his telescopic vision he sees that he has died on his home planet, after erecting a flag in triumph.
I THINK the story was from the 60s or 70s.Does this ring any bells?

Steve, sounds like Action Comics #574. It's from '85 though.

I have a digital copy of Action #574. Steven is correct, that’s the one. The art is by Kurt Schafferberger. It looks very 60s.

Steven, Superman also participated in inter-planetary Olympic games in Action Comics 220 and 304. The story from 304 was reprinted in Superman 284 in 1975. If your memory of this story from Action 574 goes back that far, you may be confusing the details of the two stories. I remember the story from Action 304 left quite an impression on me back when I was a kidlet.

Well, I've ordered Action #574 on eBay, so let's see if it is the story I remember.
Thanks again gentlemen!

It's arrived, and it's the correct issue! How odd, I haven't read it in years, but it seems so familiar!
Thanks again Doug, and the rest of the posters!

I wish I could have been of more help. I'll pick up a copy of #574 the next time I see one. I do love me some Kurt Schaffenberger art.
