Doesn’t that SECRET WARS splash just turn the page into an ad for the next issue?

Sad realization, all these years later: SECRET WARS is a better story than CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS.

Not saying much, I know.

It's more coherent, since CRISIS is a simply flailing about of discordant plot threads and editorial directives ignored until the last minute, but I'm not sure that the results are any better. What did the characters really do? What did we learn? Doom would feel better about everything if he were still good looking (and could grow to thirty feet tall?) Banner's hold over the Hulk was slipping? Jim Shooter thinks black men all talk like Smoove B? It set Magneto up to become a hero and teacher at Xavier's School, but that can hardly be seen as a good thing.

It did give us the black costume and so, ultimately, Venom, so commercially it's made back it's cost of printing many times over. It gave Ben someplace to be so we could spend a little more QT with She-Hulk over in FF. That was a plus.

End of the day, Secret Wars was just setting the stage for the even less successful Secret Wars II.

What if SECRET WARS had actually remained a literal secret from the readers? Setting aside the whole reason for the series (the toyline), of course, it would have been an interesting experiment. The heroes are gone, then they’re back, and we’d never be shown exactly what happened in-between. That would have been an interesting way to do it, although someone would eventually have to tell that story, because no stone can be left unturned.

Shooter could never have resisted the opportunity to show us all how to do it "RIGHT"!

And if you think I am kidding, consider that he used to send back the make-readys* to the editors with "See SECRET WARS #... for how to do this RIGHT!" scribbled in the margins.

---------------

First off the press--intended as a last chance to catch any printing goofs.
