Flipping thru the ESSENTIAL volume covering my days on UNCANNY X-MEN, my eye settled upon a caption. Chris chose to identify the Future part of “Days of Future Past” with a specific year—2013.That seemed a long way off when we were plotting the story in 1979, but there is an important lesson here. When playing with time travel, no matter how far in the Future a story is set, if it’s within the lifetime of those creating it, we WILL catch up to it. And PASS it!

And given that the characters are superhuman/mutants do they necessarily need to age the same as humans? (Once the X-gene is activated the mutant could be immune to free radicals or any such fundamental difference)
I definitely agree it is much better to be ambiguous than specific in these situations.

We’ve already passed by the Eugenics Wars, the moon being knocked out of orbit in 1999, and the Discovery’s Space Odyssey of 2001, among others.
BLADE RUNNER’s November of 2019 is fast approaching, and then we have THE TERMINATOR’s Year of Darkness, 2029, to look forward to.

And hoverboards in 2015.
Nike did almost get the self-lacing shoe out in time.

Whenever I went to the Century City Mall in LA, I always kept an eye out for the the talking apes that started an uprising in 1991.

This is why I was always glad they never said what year Robocop was set in. It's always the future with that movie.

1964 was a significant year in several movies when I was coming up. World War III started that year.

When playing with time travel, no matter how far in the Future a story is set, if it’s within the lifetime of those creating it, we WILL catch up to it.
***** Besides the aforementioned 1991 Century City Ape Uprising, Space:1999 and 2001 A Space Odyssey, etc. we've also zoomed by the futuristic 1980 world of UFO, the eponymous bleakness of 1984, various versions of THE STAND's devastating outbreak occurring either in the early 80s from the original 1978 novel or as late as the early 1990s depending on which re-release edition you got and even Clarke's 2010 sequel has been lapped. At least in 1895 HG Wells set The Time Machine in 802,701 so barring an unforeseen increase in life spans, it looks like none of us will live to see that dystopian future.
And speaking of Days of Future Passed...
