As he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

2 Kings 2:23-24

LOVE!!

"Little children" there is a mistranslation.  The Hebrew word 'na'ar' just means a young man or youth in general, but was commonly used for junior civil officials.  The congressional interns of the day.  Elisha, like Elijah before him, was at odds with the king and the state religion.

The "go on up" was them harassing him and trying to get him to participate in said state religion.

So, this isn't a story about bears eating kids.  Its an old man being harassed by a bunch of young brownshirts and being rescued by bears.

God apparently mellowed out by the time He incarnated as Jesus. Aside from murder sprees documented in the infancy gospels, He confined His righteous capital punishment to the plant kingdom:

 Mark 11:12-25 wrote:
On the following day, when they came from Bethany, He was hungry. And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, He went to see if He could find anything on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. And He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And His disciples heard it.

 Matthew 21:18-19 wrote:
Now in the morning as He returned into the city, He hungered. And when He saw a fig tree in the way, He came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

Piss off, tree! Nobody fucks with the Jesus!

Even accepting what you say about the mistranslation, what you say above seems like a misrepresentation. If a bear ran out of the woods and bore him away on its back, that would be a rescue.

How about:

It's an old man being harassed by a group of young public servants, who are then killed by God, using bears as his instrument of murder.

•••

How can we trust anything in the Bible?

Christians call out “mistranslation” every time the actions of their loving and merciful God makes them squeamish. Here you claim the whole passage is a mistranslation.

WHAT CAN WE TRUST?

I wasn’t ‘calling out ‘mistranslation’’ to protect God’s rep.  I was just clarifying what the text actually says.  It wasn’t written in English.  You can have whatever opinion of God sending a bear to kill some young political toughs harassing an old man.
