Can someone tell me why the President even has this power? This is not “checks and balances.” This is an elected king.

Supposedly to prevent the legislative branch from becoming too powerful. Instead it affords the executive branch the final hammer on any bill that comes before him.
Two thirds is a hefty majority to turn over a VETO!

My understanding is that when congress passed the law allowing emergency declarations, they specifically made sure congress could vote them down. Then the courts decided the President could veto the vote...

I like the veto in most cases. Since the president is so
short term and the closest thing representing the people
who voted for him. If he is working for his voters, most
likely the veto will go the way the voters want.

Having these people who have been in the system forever
having more power is scary.

"So the founding fathers got it wrong?"

On many points. That happens from time to time with human beings.

Can they tie building the wall up in good old bureaucratic red tape until he's no longer in office, then somehow shut it down?

To clarify, this was a question specific to the point in hand: so they got it wrong in wanting checks and balances on the power of the President? Things are better off with the President holding most of the power and it is not necessary to safeguard against the infirmities of the best as well as the wickedness of the worst of men?

That’s the kind of paranoia that put Trump in the White House.

Considering Trump lost the popular vote by a WIDE margin, it's incredibly scary that someone who doesn't represent the will of the majority of the people can suddenly be said to represent all of us.

Thomas, surely you can see how destructive Trump is?

He is determined to undermine the principles and foundations of America. He is a despicable a day vile person.
