Brian,

I also dropped it after Lightle left - couldn't warm up to Larsen's style either.

It took me a while to warm up to Larsen's work. The
change from Lightle's art to Larsen's was too drastic.

I remember thinking how disappointed I was that Larsen
didn't continue on the book when Morrison took over. I
think his style would've suited the quirkier tone very
well.

Not so sure about that but Morrison did parody the Liefeld/Larsen style in this issue.

Heh. I'd forgotten about DOOM FORCE.

Larsen's style is a matter of taste but I've never put him in the "he really doesn't know how to draw" file with Liefeld (or, too often, McFarlane).

Especially by doing it in the middle of a two part story. Had they waited an issue, it would've helped a smidge.

Original art from the Cartoon Art Museum's archives that's going to be included in the book's bonus pages:

Regarding Larsen, I don't think he's a terrible artist. But his style just doesn't fit the Doom Patrol, and it was too radical a change in style.

Completely forgot the change took place during a two-parter.

Incidentally, my first ever exposure to the team was one of the reprints in SUPER-TEAM FAMILY #8. The one where Negative Man takes his bandages off.

I was somehow familiar with the team prior to my first issue of Super-Team Family, number 7, possibly through a short write-up on the character of the Golden Age Robotman done by E. Nelson Bridwell for an issue of World's Finest. When my father brought that issue home for me, I was astonished to have a Doom Patrol comic in my hands. "But they're dead!" I said aloud, which unfortunately made my father think I didn't like the comic. I had to run after him to tell him how cool it was to be able to read a story about a team I never thought I'd be able to see. I didn't think they made Doom Patrol comics anymore.

Everything about that issue worked for me. The story, the art, the disembodied brain, the intelligent gorilla, the giant robot. Rita planting a boot in the robot's eye. Larry's metal walls. Robotman became an instant favorite character, and I found the team's attempt to give the Chief a birthday celebration despite knowing nothing about his history extremely charming and touching. I love that comic.

Even though I've come across the original, in which the robot, Rog (!), is colored red and the team is in green, somehow the reprint with the blue 'bot and red costumes is the one I find "definitive" and most pleasant to revisit.
