I loved Beta and Gamma Flight the moment I saw those panels!
And Wild Child's "Most people find my face...disturbing" scene actually disturbed me when I first read it! It was chilling.
I used to think he'd have been a perfect "son of Sabretooth" when I was younger - hell, I still like the idea. Maybe it was the matching hair color.

A few issues into the Mantlo/Lee run and I’ve decided that Mantlo really didn’t want to be writing AF. He’s gotten rid of everything there was to like about it. There’s absolutely nothing left to tie it to what JB had established. Right after he and JB switched titles, he starts the process of changing Mac into some supreme Machievellian asshole and it’s continued on thru Lee’s time on the title. Characters within the book keep referring to the fact that the current lineup is the most powerful lineup in the history of AF. And they only have three members!! Vindicator/Heather, Box/Jeffries and lady Sasquatch. Really? I know some creators like to put their stamp on stuff and make it their own, and this is the epitome of that. It’s such a shame.

I like how Gamma were so raw they only had generic outfits at that point. It was brilliant how when they finally appeared in full, you were able to convey so much in so few panels. As with so much of Alpha Flight, it implied all sorts of mainly untold back story.

I think also it was my first introduction to the Greek letter Gamma. I was puzzled at first to say the least...

Brian Miller: It’s like he did everything he could to make it NOT the same team.

Brian, reading your comments on Mantlo's Alpha Flight makes me glad that I quit the book when JB left. Even the small amount of information you've shared is depressing!

JB, two questions. 1) Was Omega Flight "always" the plan? 2) Based on all the above comments, would editors typically allow a new creative team to undo everything that had gone before on a successful series? It seems counter intuitive.

Oh, and Mantlo REALLY wanted Wolverine on the team. To the point where he actually made him the first member of AF.
And Dept H? The “H” is for Hudson. In the back of my mind, I kinda thought it would stand for something like hero or something along those lines, but apparently I was wrong.

Call me easily pleased, but I was 12 when ALPHA FLIGHT #1 came out and I first heard of Dept. H... I didn't think twice about what the "H" stood for and went years without caring.

The name Department H was inspired by a British TV series, a kind of off-market AVENGERS, called DEPARTMENT S. Marvel had gone thru a period of team and group books sharing titles with TV shows—THE AVENGERS, THE DEFENDERS, THE INVADERS, THE CHAMPIONS—so I thought it might be fun to hitch my wagon to that trend. DEPARTMENT S also gave us Peter Wyngarde as Jason King...
