Mr. Byrne - I've done a search here for what tools, materials, and paper you use to ink with.  I looked in the FAQ's and I've read a few links that suggested you use brushes and Sharpies, but couldn't find a conclusion for the type of paper you use.  I'm wondering if you could give a list of tools, materials, paper, and maybe a short synopsis of your approach to inking?

If these have been answered in other links or the FAQ's and I overlooked them, please anyone feel free to direct me to the links.

Thank you for your time!

Over the span of my career I have used many different tools, to achieve many different effects. When I first started with Charlton, I was using f fine point felt tip pens, not unlike the Sharpie pens I have been playing with recently -- tho with a blue base to the ink, which sometimes presented problems. I have also inked a lot with brush -- Windsor Newton Series 7, No 1 or 2. Much of my early inks on FANTASTIC FOUR were done with a Rapidograph pen, a tool to which I have also been known to return from time to time.

So basically you look for a quick-drying ink? One of the things about
inking with a pen nib or croquill that I always hated was the pool of ink
that would sit on the top of the Bristol board (especially if it was smooth
finish).

And do you prefer smooth finish or matt finish Bristol?

Just a piggy back to the question.

JB have you ever tried inking digitally? Also have any of your published
jobs have been inked digitally and what did you think of them?

Thank you,
Vlad

I knew someone once that was a self-proclaimed "brush snob." He always used to try and convince me that I should ink with a brush, and nothing else. I always stated that the talent was in the artist, not the tool, and whatever got the ink on the paper in a satisfactory manner was perfect enough.

He was a big JB fan, so I must admit some small degree of satisfaction to know JB uses a variety of tools.

I have to agree with you on this.  I've been doing a bunch of reading on inking tools and techniques.  I've read that most inkers don't like markers and have read where they have instructed people to not use them - the reason being that 1. Marker will fade over time and 2. That you can't get the same dynamic line you can get with a brush.

That's why I wanted to ask JB what he uses specifically.  I'm just curious what different people use and why as I struggle with my sucky inking.  I think my biggest problem right now is the paper I'm using and just good ol' practice.

I've been experimenting with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (using Wacom) with various ideas.  I'm trying to get a dynamic line in Illustrator and my hand apparently isn't steady enough in PhotoShop to be real nice looking.

But I guess this is all for the "Inking JB's Pencils" thread...

*****

The cover to the third issue of DOOM PATROL was "inked" digitally, using my mouse. Also one page of G3 was created entirely on the computer. Both came out pretty good, I thought.

Not sure if all the model work I did in G2 and G3 counts as "digital inks", but I thought that was mostly successful, too.

JB, in Generations, I and II, did you create all the batmobiles as 3d models?

I loved those, especially the one circa 1975.
