232 was a fantastic mini-rollercoaster ride. A testament to how much quality storytelling you can cram into a single issue.

Interesting that title on Star Wars #49.

At least by 1983 (when I started collecting), July cover dated comics reached specialty stores in March, and newsstands a month later. I do wonder when specialty shops started receiving comics a month earlier, though?

And I loved it! I had subscribed to the FF shorty before, but was very disappointed in the Moench/Siekievitcz run.

I didn't get that issues of Defenders (until years later), but I got the ones after. The Hell on Earth arc was great. The only other issue pictured above that I didn't buy was the Team-Up, which I've never read.

Loved the PPTSSS issue also. Stern!! And it showed how tough Spidey is--he took down  Jack-o-lantern pretty easily.

Steven, that issue of MTU was the only one of the comics shown above that I did read that month. I felt enormously glad to pick up FF #232 a few months later. That, and Amazing Heroes #1, which featured a Byrne homage cover to FF #1 and an article on his then-upcoming FF, were two of the earliest back issue purchases I ever made. Brings back some very happy memories of "the hunt," back when everything I ever wanted and never had suddenly seemed within reach. Quite the electric feeling.

At this point, there are probably less than half a dozen issues that I still want to own, but I'm apparently doing just fine without them, so I'm making no real effort to track them down. Plus, I need to sell off what I have, so there's no real percentage in spending money for items that will soon lack a larger context.

Ah, but back then, it was all there in front of me... :-)

BTW, that MTU is a fun Herb Trimpe illustrated tale in which Spidey and She-Hulk take on... The Man-Killer, an arch-feminist whose progressive agenda included slaying men she felt had wronged women. I almost have to wonder if some folks got scared by that comic at some point... :-)

Sometime in the 12 months after this issue came out I started to buy American issues in earnest as they became more widely available in the UK.
Prior to this I had only been getting the UK reprints.

Bought the FF and the PPTSSM issues off the shelf that month.

The summer of '81 was pop-culture heaven for me:

JB was in the earliest days of his run on FF.
The Greatest American Hero had recently debuted on TV.
Superman II was in the theaters.
And The Who's You Better You Bet was in heavy rotation on the radio.

What a year to be twelve-years-old!

This is just about when I stopped reading comicbooks.

I would've stopped completely but for JB's FF!

I bought all of those apart from the Star Wars one, from
a newsagent`s shop that was by where i caught the bus
home after seeing the girlfriend i started courting
earlier that month...she became and still is my wife, so
it was a good month/year for me!
