When Bill Sienkiewicz was working on "The Fantastic Four," and his earlier run on "Moon Knight," he was still in his "Neal Adams" phase. He got more experimental towards the latter half of "Moon Knight," and, of course, "The New Mutants."

Doug Moench did do some great work on "Master of Kung-Fu" and "Moon Knight," but I agree he wasn't at home on "Fantastic Four."

I feel like the FF might be Marvel's most difficult property to get right, especially when everyone's definition of "right" is going to be different.

JB, I just realized for the first time (consciously, I suppose) that this cover is void of text--and that's part of what makes it so striking. When you decide to go without text--and perhaps I'm being naive to assume it's the artist's decision--do you usually know that you'll go without text right from the start?

It was the editor’s choice to leave the cover devoid of copy. What I’d like to know is which gremlin stripped off “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine”!!

Funny I never noticed that but looking over all the FF covers there were some issues before yours that also had that missing.

38 years ago. Wow. It would be another 3-4 years and I would be taking my first serious dip into comic collecting with Secret Wars. Thank heavens my 9 year old brain said to "buy that comic with the Thing in it, next." I only found out that #232 was JB's first full issue in one of those Mile High Comic lists and finally bought it in  87 or 88. I miss my old comic shop.

BTW - I love reading everyone else's experiences with buying comics.

Happy memories and happy anniversary.

I bought 232 brand new at Million Year Picnic in Cambridge MA.  Loved that place... the smell of moldering paper, incense (which couldn't be good for the moldering paper) and so many rows of back issues in that dimly lit basement!  It still exists but they moved and no longer have that killer back issue stock.

I've always felt Diablo was kind of a second rate villain but John came up with an interesting angle in having the FF fight those creatures based on the four elements of nature and I liked the way they won.  A good start to his longest continuous comics run to date.
