Seems like fandom has changed too, and maybe it's me,
but with the characters not being who they were for
years now, I really only buy comics from the creators I
got to know as a kid, and usually in collected editions.

But I will buy X:Men: Elsewhen comics, so please make it
happen, Marvel. Thank you very much!

Steve Englehart came in one day, talked to every editor, basically begging for work, and got nothing.

That's why I lay the problems of the industry at the feet of the editors and the "suits" above them.  The editors I grew up with started as writers and artists and I knew their work and could trust them when they "graduated" to editor.  Nowadays, the editorial names are total unknowns.  Why in the world "Joe Nobody" should have hiring/firing power over people like Steve Englehart or Jerry Ordway (or JB or Jim Starlin, etc.) is beyond me.

Englehart wrote the ten best (to this day!) issues of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA and his BATMAN/DETECTIVE issues are still being mined for ideas in the movies and GOTHAM TV show!  (Not to mention his runs on DR. STRANGE, CAPTAIN AMERICA, AVENGERS, etc. and their influence on later comics and movies!)  DC should be begging HIM for work, not the other way around.

Mike W. Barr has stated in interviews that Len Wein was a great editor to work for precisely for the reason he was a writer himself.

I get the impression that a lot artistic jobs are being outsourced too.  Do the big 2 pay foreign creators as much as they would have to pay someone here?

Rates for comic gigs are comparable.

JRjr. was critical towards Marvel a few years back saying that Marvel doesn't hire high-priced artists. They just hire high-priced writers and fill the artists in later. It's sad because Marvel usually takes what name artists they DO have and only put them on event comics or the first few issues.

Guess that’s why JRjr has only worked for DC the last few years.

Artists and writers don't fall out of favour with their fans, it is the editors and the suits that determine their fates.

Alan Grant said that when he was fired from the Batman titles he was told they were letting him go as his work over the past year had been below par. Grant asked them why they hadn't told him this, and he would have reassessed his output and got back on track. 90 of this was done by fax. The same thing happened to Doug Moench.

Sales drop, meaning fans aren’t buying, and the editors have to wonder why.
