On this day in 1936, Roy Kelton Orbison was born in Vernon, Texas.

I feel the word unique is bandied around too often when discussing singers, but in the world of rock there really has been no-one with a voice like the Big O. Other rock pioneers tend to have been succeeded by many others imitators, but Orbison stands alone (stylistically, Chris Isaak was obviously influenced by the big O, but his voice just doesn't have that ability to soar seemingly endlessly higher).

First time I ever came across Roy Orbison was at the time of the Travelling Wilburys. I knew George Harrison, Dylan and Petty, but had no idea who the old fossil with the weird voice was (I also assumed he was blind at the time and at the time also didn't know who Jeff Lynne was). Hardly any time later, he was dead, but made a big impact on the charts the following year with a new solo record.

Over the years, I've come to have a deep appreciation for the mysterious and stilly-standing balladeer in shades.

What a set of pipes!
Most times it seemed like he was holding back lest he blew our ear drums out .
