Compared to the last few summers, this year's crop looks surprisingly slim, both in notable and total titles... what's on everyone's radar for this summer?  Listed below are wide releases only, per Box Office Mojo (I've highlighted the ones my family & I will most likely see):

April/May:
AVENGERS: ENDGAME (will probably see again at least 2 more times!)
THE INTRUDER
LONGSHOT
UGLYDOLLS
THE HUSTLE
POKEMON: DETECTIVE PIKACHU (my son loves Pokemon, but I can't stand it)
A DOG'S JOURNEY
JOHN WICK, CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM
THE SUN IS ALSO A STAR
ALADDIN (2019) (kids are more interested in this with each new trailer)
BOOKSMART
BRIGHTBURN
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (only if reviews are great, found the 2014 film oddly weird & boring)
MA
ROCKETMAN

June:
DARK PHOENIX
LATE NIGHT
THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS 2
MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL
SHAFT (2019)
ANNA
CHILD'S PLAY (2019)
TOY STORY 4 (grudgingly, as even my kids have wondered why they even made this one)
ANNABELLE COMES HOME (I already love most of the CONJURING films)
YESTERDAY

July:
MIDSOMMAR
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (comes out on my son's birthday!)
21 BRIDGES
CRAWL (might be fun, if reviews are good)
STUBER
THE LION KING (2019) (this is #1 on my family's list)
THE BOY 2
ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD (looks like a fun Tarantino entry, after the decidedly grim HATEFUL EIGHT)

August:
DORA & THE LOST CITY OF GOLD
FAST & FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW (looks like a total blast)
THE NEW MUTANTS
ARTEMIS FOWL
BRIAN BANKS
THE KITCHEN
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK
HELLO, DOLLY! (re-release) (promised my eldest daughter I'd take her to see this)
47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED
GOOD BOYS
THE INFORMER
WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE?
*THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE 2 (the one I'm avoiding at all costs!!)
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
ANGEL HAS FALLEN
OVERCOMER
PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE

I'll definitely see Godzilla and Spider-Man in the theaters.  I'll probably see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.  Maybe Aladdin.

I have to say I've never really watched a Fast & Furious movie, other than catching bits on TV but that Hobbs & Shaw trailer is wildly entertaining.

I'm a fan of the original Child's Play. With Mark Hammill as the voice of Chucky, I could be on board for the remake, barring bad reviews.

Going to watch Avengers: Endgame on Tuesday night.

Spider-Man will probably take my money

As an Elton John fan, I will most likely check out Rocket Man (once again, barring terrible reviews).

The fer-sure ones are;

SPIDER-MAN
AVENGERS
GODZILLA

...also, thru out the summer, will be going with my daughter to the theater during Studio Ghibli Fest. No new releases but still a good time at the movies.

Still haven't seen AVENGERS: ENDGAME but will definitely see it in a theater.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS -- it looks like the best giant monster movie ever made. (Rodan and Ghidorah look scary as hell, finally.) Take my money!!

DETECTIVE PIKACHU -- I wouldn't normally watch this (not my generation's cultural touchstone, sorry) but my (younger) girlfriend insists, and some things you have to do for love. And, in any case, Ryan Reynolds...

LONGSHOT is a maybe. As is THE HUSTLE. As is MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL.

SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME -- I'll wait to see the reviews first.

SHAFT -- I usually can't resist Samuel L. Jackson, but...I dunno.

Totally ignoring the last of the Fox X-MEN movies. Die, franchise, die!!

The extended trailer I saw Saturday for Godzilla-King of Monsters was unbelievable!  This looks like its going to be so...so good.

The trailer was better than the last movie in its entirety.

Here's what's on my radar (so far):

  • AVENGERS: ENDGAME (I saw this on Sunday; I'll be going again with my wife and son)
  • JOHN WICK, CHAPTER 3: PARABELLUM (I have to watch the first two first)
  • ALADDIN (2019) - This is a maybe.  Generally, I'm not a fan of the live action remakes (I avoided Dumbo like the plague), but this one does have promise.
  • ROCKETMAN - Since my wife and I liked the Freddy Mercury bio-pic, we'll probably be in for this one
  • DARK PHOENIX - Hopefully, they won't screw this one up
  • MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL- I wasn't considering this until I read a preview.  Now I'm interested
  • SHAFT (2019) - I liked the last one with Samuel Jackson, so I'm in for this one.
  • TOY STORY 4 - Maybe.
  • SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME - Definitely.  I liked the last one.
  • ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD - Looking forward to this one.
  • FAST & FURIOUS: HOBBS & SHAW - This looks like a hoot.
  • THE NEW MUTANTS - It's a maybe.
  • I likely won't bother with GODZILLA, even though I liked Kong: Skull Island.  It'll depend on the reviews.

Phil, you can re-classify NEW MUTANTS as "definitely not." It's been pushed back to April 2020, its third rescheduling...and I wouldn't be shocked if never reaches theaters at all.

I'm definitely in for GODZILLA, but the rest of the summer looks a little thin.

I did see ROCKETMAN a couple weeks back, and right before the film, they showed a red-band trailer for the upcoming release GOOD BOYS...

...All I can say is:  As a parent, it's one of the least unfunny but most offensive things I've seen all year so far.

The 24-hour news channels are going to go berserk when this thing is released!

So I ended-up seeing:
AVENGERS: ENDGAME
ALADDIN
ROCKETMAN
TOY STORY 4
ANNABELLE COMES HOME
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME
HELLO, DOLLY!  (re-release)

AVENGERS and ANNABELLE were my top 2 favorites... ALADDIN was a giant dud.

My kids were (perhaps not surprisingly) lukewarm about TOY STORY; my son and I greatly enjoyed SPIDER-MAN; and HELLO, DOLLY is the "new" musical favorite for both of my daughters.

All-in-all, though, kind of a mediocre summer at the movies this year.

(My kids also saw THE LION KING with my wife... they weren't that impressed!)

There are still a few summer releases I intend to see and haven't yet, but if we're calling the movie season over with this weekend, then I made it to:

AVENGERS: ENDGAME (6x)
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (4x)
SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME (4x)
BRIGHTBURN
ALADDIN
CHILD'S PLAY
MA
TOY STORY 4
YESTERDAY
MIDSOMMAR
CRAWL
THE LION KING
ONCE UPON A TIME...IN HOLLYWOOD
47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED

Still hope to see these before they leave the big screen:
ANNABELLE COMES HOME
GOOD BOYS
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT
SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK
THE FAREWELL
ROCKETMAN
BOOKSMART

and a few more viewings of OUATIH
