I follow what Marvel's EIC is trying to do by soliciting this book & obtain a million orders. But the real issue is what is Marvel Comics going to do when all the old farts running all the comic shops & ordering this stuff die off.Let's face it the majority of comic shops are owned by the Baby Boomer generation & Generation X'ers. My question to the board what would you do if you were running Marvel's comic division?

Would I do if I were running Marvel's comic division? Hire some professionals from the past that can serve the characters, not their egos.

Also, do away with redundant characters and teams. (Peter Parker should be the ONLY Spider-Man, Bruce Banner is the ONLY Hulk, etc.)

Marvel Comics #1000 is stupid if there aren’t 999 issues behind it.

In the words of Arthur Carlson :

I had to look this up to see if it was real. Sounds like a good investment - I imagine a #1000 is many times more valuable than a #1 issue? ;)

JB: Yes, you may have a death ray. But under the new PC guidelines,
we now refer to such an apparatus as “Populace Enhancement
Device.” Use it wisely.

Hey..!!! Don't go trying to knock me off, yet. I hope to have at least a few more years on the planet.

Seriously, though, while the world continues to unquestionably change, and the print media becomes smaller, I've also been hearing talk about comics dying out for almost as long as I've been reading them. As far as the actual format, the printed comic book goes, it's pretty much certain it will go away as nothing lasts forever. It's hard to peg when that will happen, though. I mean it when I say this kind of talk has been going on a long time. The demise of the comic book industry has been predicted as far back as the 1970s. Heck, even in the 1950s it looked grim at some points.

As for what I would do... well here is what I wrote back in 2006:

In that thread, you'll note I point to "Wizard" magazine changing its format as a good thing. Even though the magazine is now defunct, I still stand by what I wrote then in that regard. "Wizard"'s failure had more to do with how it mishandled its shows and ruined relationships with the big publishers, which also affected the magazine. That and that in the internet age, "Wizard" was dated material the moment a new issue came out, depending as it did on news on current events for sales. I still think the comics publishers need to change the format of comics as one means to extend the life of the industry.

But there are many, many things I would change if I had free reign at Marvel, or DC.

I don't consider the people who run my LCS "Old Farts" (33 and 25, though the owner is 56) but I'm not a fan of Marvel doing these stunts.

And in a similar vein, simply mandate that your newer
generation of creators adopt the same approach, perhaps
under the guidance of the more experienced. Those that
can't adapt are shown the door.

One of the things I would implement is an admonishment to either say NOT WORD ONE about upcoming comics, beside what the company releases (Direct Comments or Marvel's Bullpen Bulletins) or to be shown the door. Put some surprise back into upcoming comic book stories.

Is that hard on the 238,000 thousand comic book blogs? Well, there are plenty of other topics to discuss besides spoiling AN ENTIRE BOOK. Or they could ask the buggy whip manufacturers and AM radio factory workers their opinions on how to handle it.
