I agree with JB's comment that too many artist get the proportions all wrong. The Thing should be massive, but via width not height.

Some of my all-time favorite Thing moments and images have him in a trenchcoat. Anybody drawing a Thing that could never fit in a trenchcoat have gotten things terribly wrong.

So this is what goes on in the current FF comic.
Nice to see them keep the LEE/KIRBY spirit of the book alive. [sarcasm ended]

I guess that publicity-grabbing ban on people smoking in Marvel comics has gone bye-byes.

An element that has gotten lost over the years--and this goes all the way back to Kirby--is forgetting he's called "the Thing" for a reason. He's not something easily defined. Not "Rock Man". Not "Mr. Cobblestones". And certainly not Fozzie Bear. The more "realistic" artists try to make him, the less monstrous he becomes. Less of a THING.

I suppose ennui over time helps get the Thing wrong. To me it would definitely be the wrong approach for a creative team to feel so weighed down by the nearly 60[!] year history of the character that they make Ben so comfortable in his Thing-"skin" that he loses the pain of being a walking-talking monster.

"He must be used to it by now!" Even ignoring that "Marvel Time" covers only a fraction of what we have experienced, could one really wake up one morning as the Elephant Man and really "get used to it"?

Just being a fellow in his 50s and looking in the mirror and remembering what I looked like not that long ago is troubling enough...!

These individuals clearly have a very strong grasp of psychology.

One of the great additions (evolutions) Mr Byrne brought to the Thing was the forehead/eyebrow plate. You have to love the late Kirby/Sinnott through Perez muppet style "m" eyebrow on Ben but it really doesn't make a whole lot of sense...
John's redesign (refocusing) of Ben's forehead into eyebrow ridge in FF 232 has for the most part become the standard interpretation.
*small edit for syntax.

I guess that publicity-grabbing ban on people smoking in Marvel comics has gone bye-byes.------------------------------------ I suppose they get round it by it being 'bubblegum' cigars, not real ones, despite that not making any sense (how stupid are the characters supposed to be?). Presumably hours after the game begins they are still puzzling over the non-smoking, bubblegum-smelling things in their mouths.

Wallace, if you liked those, ypu should get, "Fantastic Four: The End". Six issues of Alan Davis doing the FF, and much of the Marvel Universe as well. Absolutely GORGEOUS! |

I got the issues as they were released. It's a FANTASTIC series! (Davis' art is so incredible that his writing - which is also very good - often goes unnoticed.)
