Believe it or not, once upon a time Dan Slott was a really good writer.

Yeah, I haven't cared for his Tony Stark: Iron Man or his Fantastic Four. I actually tweeted to two guys who work at my LCS (not including the stores Twitter handle or Slott's) about how a piece of dialogue at the beginning caused a cold stop for me and resulted in me dropping the book. Dan Slott somehow caught my comment and responded disagreeing with my reasoning. He deleted the comment and I wasn't attacking him but it was just a line that Sue says that seemed very much unlike something she'd say based on all the years I've been reading the Fantastic Four. But that line, coupled with scenes like the one Eric shared, just don't feel like the Fantastic Four to me.

This is the portrayal of the Thing that does it for me:

Not sure about the coloring and embellishments, but the underlying look of this Thing screams "tortured soul".

Add to that a Ben Grimm who looks and sounds like Neville Brand (e.g. in this video of Riot in Cell Block 11), and it'd be spot on for my money!

Isn't that Sharon Ventura, aka Ms. Marvel II/She-Thing in the Simonson page?

Pine Cone Man! Who thought that was a good idea?

No shade on Keith, who is a fine artist, but that design was just ridiculous. I drew it once, and there was nothing to do with it that didn't look comical.

JB, what do you think the Thing's "skin" feels like?

The individual “plates” I think would have a surface texture like rough sandpaper.
