Rookie mistake by Kitty ! Now it's up to Colossus
or a very slowly regenerating Wolverine to spoil
Modok's plot ! So enjoyable !!! I smell another
terrific Byrne cliffhanger ! Boy I love this one
page a day format !!!

Dampening field - powers don't work. Sometimes I wonder how effective the X-Men would be without their powers (same with the Fantastic Four, actually.)

I think it would barely impact Cyclops - it might even make him MORE effective without worrying about killing someone. Wolverine has lots of skills even without his healing, although I wonder how much they're helped by his "mutation."* Colossus is a big strong boy, Nightcrawler is an acrobat, and Ororo is a thief and a goddess... well, that last may not be worth a lot, but ya never know.

I know that this was addressed by Mr. Claremont in X-Men 150. But I'm looking forward to how Mr. Byrne treats this. This "book" is so damned much fun!

*I wonder if Wolverine is like Kurt, with a number of mutations. And I wondered, since "Logan", exactly how the adamantium works with his body. Is his body constantly fighting adamantium poisoning and rejection, or was it done so that his body would accept it? Eh... I'm probably overthinking it.

Bottom line, no matter how long this goes on for, you're not going to see any real passage of time. I'm not even paying attention to the seasons!

I'm sure even a de-powered Scott Summers would not be one to be trifled with. But I can't recall that sheer fisticuffs were ever a skill he relied upon and therefore independently honed -- albeit the Danger Room surely kept him not only incredibly fit and developed in him extraordinary reflexes.

Luckily, there is a GREAT issue of What if...? by JB that answers that very
question (at least for the FF)!!!

One of my fondest memories from childhood is an issue of WORLD’S FINEST in which Superman and Batman are in Kandor. Superman is without his powers in that environment, and is set upon by normal human thugs. He fights back, and one of the bad guys cries out “Even without his powers, this guy’s TOUGH!”

Dampening field...

•••

You’ll notice I used “damping”. In my head, to damp down is to weaken, to dampen is to make wet!

Definitely. Brings to mind one of the scenes from SUPERMAN II that I least like (inter alia, for sure).

JB: "You’ll notice I used “damping”. In my head, to damp down is to weaken, to dampen is to make wet!"

OOPS! Of course, after Storm's attack, it could apply...

Michael P. - You may be right that Scott isn't a melee machine. Still, I remember at least once when he took on Wolverine, and did it mostly hand to hand. I think that fisticuffs is tremendously safer than a killing eye blast... and for some reason, I think of Scott as a hell of a fighter.

Brenden D. - Oh, you bet. I got it REALLY as fast as I could; it was great.

The downside of that WHAT IF?—which was fun to work on—was that Joe Sinnott was originally set to ink/finish over my breakdowns, so I drew the pages thinking to take maximum advantage of Joe’s skills. Skills I didn’t possess when he had to back out and the inking job went to me.

Eric -- sure, I remember well when Cyclops took on (for a few seconds, at any rate) Wolverine during JB's run. He tossed Wolverine about a couple of times (if classic Stan Lee had been scripting it, no doubt Scott would have said or thought something about Judo!), although he also mildly used his eye beam to knock some wind out of Wolverine. Cyclops is no pushover! But de-powered he wouldn't stand a chance against, say, Captain America.

Loving Kitty in this series. This character did not last long after joining the team.
