I identify as generation X (born 1976). I rarely if ever come across anyone younger than I that has an appreciation for the Western genre. Be it movies, novels, or comics, I just don't see this genre getting a resurgence from a younger demo. So this begs the question....is this a doomed genre?
Aslo JB - Did you ever want to try your hand in the genre? Be it Jonah Hex or perhaps the Two Gun Kid etc..

There still seems to be an audience for genres with Western tropes, like space westerns with FIREFLY/SERENITY, COWBOY BEBOP, and TRIGUN or neo-westerns like JUSTIFIED. So there seems to be room for Western-style heroes and villains in Western-style stories as long as you don't actually set it in the Old West.

Every once and awhile the genre is pronounced dead and someone produces an epic Western.

I often wonder if the Western genre becoming more mature and realistic in the 60's with the Spaghetti Westerns and latter American made Westerns that tried to imitate them contributed to the genre becoming less popular with people, especially kids.

It's hard for me to think of many westerns recently (Young Guns? Cowboys and Aliens? Any of the OK Corral bunch of films?) I would certainly enjoy them as much as any.
But again, the story, direction, and action have to be good. I might consider seeing a western-for-western's sake. I just don't think Hollywood sees a demand, and so they ignore it (instead of CREATING a demand with good product.)

I don't think the genre is completely dead yet. I've certainly seen a reasonable number of westerns produced in the last year or so. The Sisters Brothers and the Ballad of Buster Scruggs leapt to mind immediately. Going back over the last few years, it seems like there's been at least one major western a year, like the Magnificent Seven, True Grit, 3:10 to Yuma, the Assassination of Jesse James, There Will Be Blood, etc.
But where I think you'll find most of your westerns going forward is on television. We're already seeing shows like Deadwood, Hell on Wheels and Godless, along with more modern interpretations like Longmire. I suspect the genre is reasonably safe for the near future.

Also, one of the biggest games last year was RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2.

One of my favorite westerns is JB's "History Lesson" from
GENERATIONS III
All great film/TV suggestions, Ray - some solid recent
titles and enough classics to sustainn it as a genre. I
doubt it will be as big as it was when films and TV were
emerging, but it will remain.
Is there a historical consensus on why film westerns faded
in popularity?

Westerns are one of my favorite genre of movies. And John Wayne one of my favorite actors.
