An item over on the IMDb refers to the new LION KING using this term. I wondered how long they’d keep calling it “live action”.

Per an interview with Jon Favreau on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE, there is only one
shot that is real. Everything else is CGI

Why not just use the term "animation?"

Or, if they're remakes to animated films, using CGI to make them look as realistic as possible:

Real-makes!

(*cough*)

The old Osamu Tezuka Jungle Emporer comics full of white lion monarchs are real enough for me, and very enjoyable! This and similar remakes are to me a bit of what Philip K. Dick called "skim milk masquerading as cream".

After watching the new Lion King, it puzzled me, we can
get photo-realistic animals with expressive eyes, and
life-like fur but humans, not so much with eyes and
skin.

We’re MUCH more familiar with what humans look like.

Interestingly enough, my kids had a conversation last night, after watching the new live-action LADY & THE TRAMP trailer, and lamenting the new LION KING (another one they were lukewarm about)... without any persuasion or leading on my part, they proclaimed that they prefer "talking" animal movies where you simply hear their thoughts, without trying to make their mouths & lips move (a favorite example of theirs was HOMEWARD BOUND).

Seems the "uncanny valley" can extend to kids and animals as well!
