As the tale is told--and a tale may be all it is--the Him story came about when Ditko convinced Kirby to read some Ayn Rand. The hive and its scientists were Kirby's take on Objectivism.

Stan didn't see it that way, and wrote a different story from the one Jack drew.

Interesting.  I never knew Ditko had Kirby read Rand.

I always preferred Kirby's take on Him - at least what we saw of it.  I didn't care much for Adam Warlock.

I may be misreading things badly here, (and I probably am) but Ditko and Stan portrayed Spider-Man and Dr Strange both being humbled by selfish acts. Seems hard to recognize that with Ditko's endorsement of Objectivism, which, as Roger Ebert describe the philosophy, meant "I'm on board the boat--haul up the line."
