Flipped over my STAR TREK wall calendar this morning to find the illustration for August is a frame from "Spock's Brain". Instant memories of the emotional crash that accompanied seeing the first broadcast of that episode. After the fight to "save" STAR TREK, this was our reward??

sigh

This episode was on cable the other day as I was channel-browsing and I watched some of it. Ya know, as a tiny tot, when I first saw it, I didn't think it was so bad. I loved the characters so much and, I mean, you have to hand it to the leads, because as actors they really did their best to sell this crap story. But, jeez louise, watching it now, it really is sooooooo bad. The scene I saw recently was Kirk and McCoy debating how to find Spock's brain and then restore it. The words were so DUMB, it was painful. Also, it could be my adult imagination, but unlike when I was small, today I can almost think I see the pain in their faces as they do their best to make a chocolate glacé out of this ordure.

…I can almost think I see the pain in their faces…

••

They did all seem very tired thru much of the third season.

I went back and watched season 3 awhile back.  I was discouraged to discover that most of the lousy episodes I remembered that I had mentally sorted into season 3 were actually clunkers from season 2, and that season 3 was primarily made up of crap so bad I had blotted it out of my memory.

I agree the cast seems tired in Season Three.  They also seem pissed off, to boot!  There's almost no warm humor and camaraderie to be found in most of those episodes.

The third season, as noted before, is also when the 1960s began to intrude on the show, with shaggier hairstyles and longer, thicker sideburns. Only Spock seemed untouched by this.

That seems to happen to many tv series. I remember the later seasons of HAPPY DAYS with many a feathered hair of the the late seventies early eighties.
