I remember when Catholic Rudy Giuliani was deeply offended by a piece of art detailing the Madonna covered in feces. He even complained about the matter to both his wife and his mistress.

Noble sentiments, and I agree in principle. But in practice, we need "good guys with guns" to maintain order in civil society. We even have proper adult names for these "good guys with guns": the Police, the Military, the Coast Guard, etc.

What we don't need is guns in the hands of unregulated militia, which is what the NRA actively promotes.

A problem, of course, is that so many of the lunatics with guns think they ARE the "good guys", and that the authorities, who should be the only ones allowed to have guns, are not.

In England, when I was a kid, the TV series GUNSMOKE was, for some reason, retitled GUNLAW. A summation, sadly, of the society we have created for ourselves.

It's a mass outbreak of Dunning-Kruger Syndrome that may eventually dwarf the Black Plague in terms of global damage. An estimated 60 million victims had fallen prey to its effects by late 2016; with Brexit and Election 2020 soon upon us, the toll is set to rise much higher...

If the solution to gun violence is more guns, then the US must be the safest country for Gun Violence in the world. Is it?

The saddest thing is that Trump is one of the few Republicans who could defy the NRA and probably not suffer any political consequences.  His followers are still intensely loyal and willing to believe anything he says, so they would not turn on him.  And I get the sense that Trump probably does believe there should be stricter gun laws.  He just doesn't care enough about the issue to bother doing anything about it, probably because he perceives that there's nothing in it for him.

His followers will believe anything he says as long as he says what they believe.

Well said. Trump, as a classic demagogue and populist, has enough rat cunning to know that he should never stray from his core supporters' three basic tenets: God, Guns & Country.

Three things that I am certain Trump does not personally believe in, given he is the living embodiment of the Seven Deadly Sins, a known draft-dodger and schmoozer of foreign despots, who runs his own businesses largely with overseas funds and labor.

I believe also that Trump's flock are being trained to believe whatever he says as the truth. Although I can't see an iota of it, he must have an incredible charisma to get and hold his herd. And then again... the bigger the lie, the more that seem to believe it. It might not take a lot for a clever charlatan to convince him that HE could get a Fourth Reich correct this time.
