I guess technically Infinity Man is more of a swap out than a combination.
And it just occurs to me that my new #3 is kind of a variation on the currently unsolved Hawkman, Falcon, Black Widow, Iron Fist and Captain Britain one. Silly subconscious.

My guess also. Drax had the essence of Infinity Man passed along to him.
Edit to add, Dave beat me to it.

I may have misunderstood the exact nature of the Forever People's relationship to the Infinity Man when I was formulating my question. I honestly thought that they combined to the form the character, so the answer Brad Monje gave is the one I was looking for.
I have found a source that states that they share their powers with the Infinity Man, granting him additional abilities while they're in Limbo, so I do think it can be said they are combined with him once he's been called to our plane of existence, even if the connection is not what I first thought it to be.
In any case, my apologies to all for the error.
I know next-to-nothing about the Suicide Squad, so I'm not going to venture a guess as to Dave's first two questions, and as I lack a theory as to his previous question, I won't try for the similarly-themed one listed at #3 either.
I do look forward to someone coming up with the answers, though. :-)

Hey, you got the hard part of the answer(s). The rest is pretty basic. Other candidates for #1 would be Ravan, Psi and Blockbuster. Other candidates for #2 would be Deadshot, Vixen and Nemesis.
Really, I was just looking for an excuse to give a shout out to a series I'm very fond of and am in the middle of re-reading. :-)

Are the characters in the first group Suicide Squad members killed on various missions? I vaguely recall hearing that Blockbuster had been killed and I believe the Adam Cray version of the Atom also died in the line of duty on the team.

Yep! (Which should also be a pretty big hint about what may be different about the other set.)

Are they characters who made it to the end of the series alive?

Doug, did you and I just post similarly themed puzzles within a few minutes of one another? Looking at your list, I think we did...
