Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Barry Allen, Creeper, and Metamorpho.
Dave, the common thread I was looking for with these was the original creator or co-creator returned to the character after being away for a time.
Kirby took over Cap's book in the 70's; Bill Everett returned to the Sub-Mariner in the 40's when he came back from the war, in the 50's when Atlas attempted a revival, in the 60's in issues of Tales To Astonish, and then again in the 70's starting with issue #50; Carmine Infantino illustrated Barry's first adventures in Showcase and his own title as well as his final few years just before the Crisis; Steve Ditko returned to the Creeper in World's Finest; and Ramona Fradon returned to illustrate Metamorpho in First Issue Special #3.
I especially like your guess involving lost loves. I didn't realize how close I came to creating such a list. :-)

The answer was characters with a regular feature in Detective Comics. Obviously Batman, but also Aquaman from #293-300, Martian Manhunter from #225-326 and Green Arrow from #521-567.
