Of course! Can you guess the elements that set our two lists apart, Dave?

Hey, it took your question to Doug to get me to figure out what they had in common in the first place. :-)

Back to my unsolved ones...

Hawkman, Falcon, Black Widow, Iron Fist and Captain Britain

Shang Chi, Thor, Captain Atom, the Flash (Barry), Hercules (Marvel's version)

A hint or three -

It's not so much what the characters did as where they did it (and I'm not referring to the setting of the stories).

For the second, while I only mentioned Captain Atom, several other Charlton action heroes could have qualified.

While not quite what I had in mind, Captain America arguably qualified for the first list and then went on to qualify for the second list.

Captain Nemo, The Prisoner, Dr. Who, The Man From UNCLE, James Bond, Tevye, Achilles.

Peter: Is this something to do with actors playing different nationalities?
*****
You're on the right track with actors, but it's unrelated to nationality.  Actors who played these roles have one striking thing in common.

Another clue: British noir

Hmm... hadn't thought of that. But not what I was going for. Think more along the lines of publishing history than character history.

Well, my other guess was that none of them made their debut in their own title, but Captain Britain did. So I’m totally at a loss.

Another list or two...

Metamorpho, Spider-Man, the Creeper, Daredevil, Namor, Dev-Em, and Sunfire. (Note: these may have changed at a different date.)

Kal-El, the Thing, Batman, the Beast, Captain America, Iceman, the Angel, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner), the Hulk, Donna Troy, Namor, Lar Gand, Phantom Girl, Vance Astro, Firestar.

Hawkman, Falcon, Black Widow, Iron Fist and Captain Britain...

One half of a duo-titled comic? They each joined an existing title, changing the name of the book to reflect their ongoing presence in it. Hawkman and the Atom. Captain America and the Falcon. Daredevil and Black Widow. Power Man and Iron Fist. And the British comic Super Spider-Man and Captain Britain.

I'm still a bit confuzzled on the other set of clues...

Shang Chi, Thor, Captain Atom, the Flash (Barry), Hercules (Marvel's version)...

How about... characters who took over existing titles all on their own:
Master of Kung-Fu, formerly Special Marvel Edition.
Thor, formerly Journey Into Mystery.
Captain Atom appeared in both Charlton's Space Adventures and Strange Suspense Stories, taking over the later title with issue #78.
When Flash Comics was cancelled in 1949 with issue #104, the title continued as All-Star Western. It then picked up again with #105 as The Flash in 1959, telling the stories of Barry now instead of Jay.
Hercules, formerly the Incredible Hulk, switching over with issue #113 in 2008.

Just for the record concerning the song titles, I don't know if Doug intended it, but three of his examples were from British artists and his fourth was re-recorded twice by Canadians, and they still have the Queen on their money, so... :-)

On my list, none of the songs had anything to do with the comic characters whose names they share. So no "Captain America Calling" or "Superman's Song." Iron Man is about a tragically doomed time traveller; Wildfire is the ghost of a doomed horse; The Joker is a be-boppin' free spirit whom some people call "Maurice," 'cause he speaks of the Pompatus of Love; The Thing is an otherwise undescribed series of percussive drum beats found in a great big wooden box a-floatin' in the bay; and Charlie Brown is an unrepentant, self-defeating high school delinquent.
