Years ago, along with my brother, we dove into the genealogy abyss.
It was during this that I learned of the Soundex, which codes all surnames by sound instead of spelling.
Mine is C-536, with the 5=N, 3=T, 6=R.

A few more have sprung to mind...a book publisher and
character in Pride and Predudice=William Collins.

Joan Collins`s brother and a guy who always seemed to
get a credit on Rush album sleeves in the 80`s for
"Concert Rigging"=Bill Collins.

Every time I talk about Howard Mackie, I have this tendency to say "Bob Mackie", who was the costume designer for Carol Burnett as well as Sonny and Cher back in the day.

I really don't know why.

There is a Jazz guitarist with my name.  He sewed up all the website, email and social media handles with the name as he thinks he is really famous (not).

Well there is an actor called Jason Scott Lee. I remember seeing Map of the Human Heart many years ago, and half hoping he didn't become famous. (It is a very good film though.)

Then in the same year, Dragon The Bruce Lee story came out and all of a sudden I was fielding off jokes left right and centre on whether I could do martial arts, was related to Bruce Lee etc

I do have a friend who doesn't know who this John Byrne is, but she constantly talks about the playwright/painter. (Probably because we're in Scotland.) It always gives me moment of pause before I remember oh yeah...not talking about the Chief! ;)

I think back to when I was just starting my journey into comics as a profession. I gave some serious thought to using a phonetic pen name, Jon Burn or Birn. After all, my whole life I'd been vexed with people pronouncing my name Byrun, or Be-ern, or Brine. And my paternal grandfather had been Fred E. Burns when he appeared on the stage in England. Tradition!

In the end, tho, I decided to damn the torpedoes and steam ahead with the familiar spelling.

As you speak of Stage, was your grandfather the western actor from the 30's, or an homonymous (sorry for my ignorance) ?

And yes, indeed, your name was often mispronounced in France, in something like "Beer-ne" (but with many love and respect !!).

Gran’dad Byrne was a “versatile comedian” (and song and dance man) appearing in the music halls when he was younger.

My day job requires me to email a huge amount of people over the course of a year. Over time, I have received so many replies from all over the world for 'Carl' that I opened up a file to keep them all in.

I can only think that this is some word-smashing of my full name to get to 'Carl'...

A comic-reading buddy of mine went with 'Byern' (and Claus Janson - a la Santa - strangely enough!)

A John Byrne played for Sunderland FC at the same time so I was pretty sure I had it right...!

Oddly enough, people seem to have no trouble with O’Byrne or Byrnes.
