The most important thing that is so relentlessly overlooked by Hollywood and ennui-engorged fanboys is that Batman (and Superman and Flash and Green Lantern etc) lives in a world where putting on a costume to fight crime is PERFECTLY NORMAL. That’s right, class. It’s not OUR world. It’s not even pretending to be. Surprise, surprise.

When Stan Lee & Co. moved superheroes into the "real" world, that was a lot of fun. But only because they understood that it wasn't ever meant to be portrayed as the real world.

I knew Gotham and Metropolis were not real, but when I was introduced to the Fantastic Four, whose adventures took place in New York, a city I'd visited, I was innocent enough to think they might somehow be real. Maybe they just weren't reported on Canadian TV?

Every time I went through Forest Hills as a little kid, I looked for Spider-Man! Lee & Co. made it all truly an amazing fantasy. That could be Peter Parker's house! [sigh] The Old-Timers really knew how to make comicbooks fun without ruining its very premises.

It seems that fanboys, Hollywood and certain writers now cannot accept that comics are all about suspension of disbelief.
Greg Rucka said this in an interview with Comics Alliance on his tenure on Batman:
Denny was fond of saying "We don't ask why the Batmobile doesn't get caught in traffic." That is apparently the corollary to the Archie Goodwin saying about how the entire DC Universe is an inverted pyramid built on a secret identity that's a pair of glasses. If you want to tear it apart, you can do so with ease. You're not nearly as clever or smart as you think you are if you decide to go and nitpick it and tear it down, because there are loose threads everywhere. All that proves is that you're a killjoy. [Laughs] If you want to take it apart, it's very easy to do, but that's not the point. You either accept the world you're in or you don't. If you do, you're going to have a blast. If you don't, you better find something else to read, because you're going to be very unhappy.

Both those quotes are brilliant, hadn't heard them before.

The flipside can also be a problem. As someone said, “Just because Spider-Man can climb walls doesn’t mean you can have flying shoes.”(Yes, yes, the Trickster. Just go with the premise, okay?)
