The last public execution by guillotine, in France, was in 1977. Yes, that second digit is a 9.

The site linked below shows an execution from 1938. It’s disturbing. So quick. No fuss, no muss. And from the angle shot, no gore. I wonder if the condemned man was sedated in some way.

Your choice.....

Studies suggest a severed head remains alive for up to thirty seconds. Surely the longest thirty seconds in the universe.

I have read that in some instances the head was quickly picked up and turned so the victim could view his decapitated body before dying. Gruesome!

Wow. 1977. I thought this was something that was 1800s and before. Speaking of archaic means of execution, it looks like the last hanging for the death penalty in the US was in 1996. Also a few southern states still use the electric chair, but most states have gone to lethal injection.

John Oliver's discussion of the horrors of lethal injection almost makes one long for the guillotine...!

+++++++++++++++
Tennessee recently excuted someone by electric chair (a murdering bastard who sat on death row about 30 years), and he picked the method of execution.

It troubles me when someone is on death row that long. They’re really no longer killing the person who committed the crime.

Seems like the guillotine would be the quickest way to go.
Who knows what's going on inside of you during lethal injection. The first dose I believe paralyzes you.

I still vividly remember the firing squad scene from THE EXECUTIONER'S SONG. It's stuck with me for nearly forty years!

The problem with lethal injection is that no one with medical training will do it and that's why they go terribly wrong it's certainly not like euthanizing your dog or cat.

There is also a deliberate element of PUNISHMENT.

The ironic thing is that they have to clean the area of injection with alcohol before inserting the needle.

I think it's an interesting debate whether execution or keeping someone alive in captivity is the worst punishment. In my mind, I don't think execution accomplishes what we wish. Such as deterrence and closure. But in my heart, I think some bastards deserve to die.

Except cases of treason (death by firing squad), every executions in France used guillotine since French Revolution.

Well... it was better than using an axe apparently...

Of course I'm more than happy death penalty was abolished in France nearly 40 years ago.

Dr. Guillotin, who suggested but did not actually invent the guillotine, saw it as a more humane method of execution. Too often the axe, the sword or the rope led to bungled procedures.* The blade of the guillotine was swift--and it could never miss.

Plus, it didn't HURT.
