This brings home how very young he was as Superman. To this day, in my opinion, still the most perfect casting of any superhero. The unfathomable value of choosing an unknown who is right for the role!

Often I’ve said how great it was to look up at the screen and see SUPERMAN. By as soon as the second film he had become a huge celebrity, and we saw Christopher Reeve.

The other side of the coin, was it was hard NOT to think of Superman when he did other roles. To my younger self, he was the very model of Superman.
He was a very talented actor and seemed like a truly nice guy. Left us far too soon.

Petter is exactly right.
If Superman was real he'd look like Christopher Reeve in 1978, I'm convinced.

Anyone who has played Superman since or will in the future has been or will be standing in his shadow. I don't think you could cast the character more perfectly.
Aside from the first two Superman films (not a big fan of the the latter two), my two favorite performances of his were in Deathtrap and a tv movie called The Rose and the Jackal where he played Allan Pinkerton. There's also an episode of Tales From The Crypt he was in that was quite good. The tv version of Rear Window he did after his accident was hard to watch, but he did a great job in it.

Very close together we got Christopher Reeve as Superman, and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman, and for a long time I said they seemed to have exhausted the quota for good superhero casting.

Reeve is, of course, the best Superman there's been.
I think Chris Evans has captured the different facets of Cap/Steve extremely well. He does it without irony nor any post modern wink. Much like Reeve. Same with Chadwick Boseman.

Chris Evans exists in a world in which that could happen, afforded the right by those that came before. Christoper Reeve blazed a trail heretofore unknown. That's why, to me, Reeve will always hold a very special place in my heart.

I totally agree about Chris Evans, Scott. I was a bit apprehensive when I heard he was going to be playing Cap because even though he looked the part, he'd already done what I thought was a great job as Johnny Storm (and the best thing about those movies IMO). But the guy is a real chameleon as most good actors are and very good at inhibiting their roles. That said, I'm with Matt and feel that Christopher Reeve as Superman is the best bit of superhero casting there's been in my lifetime. I loved how when JB started writing and drawing Superman there was a bit of Chris Reeve there. It didn't seem forced like some of the Marvel changing stuff to fit the movies did later because he was so perfectly cast.

In praising Evans, I'm not diminishing Reeve's place at the top of my list. I just saying that Evans follows the trail Reeves blazed better than most.
