Looking at that picture.....

My multiple dental extractions have had the unfortunate side effect of causing me to drool when I eat. Yuck. In order to make it easier to use a napkin efficiently, I shave my beard just below my lower lip. Whenever anyone notices, I don't say "because I drool," I say "It's my No-Soul Patch."

Mr. Byrne, you and Mr. Simonson look great. I guess Jim W. does too... I wouldn't recognize him by his work, save for your well deserved lauds.

But I wonder how DC or Marvel editorial would feel, looking at that backdrop for IDW with you rock solid in front of it. Do they think, "Eh. He's not relevant anymore. And he's so dominating to work with - wants his own way on his own stories" or do they think, "Oh my God, Byrne (and/or Simonson) still sell comics! Why the hell do we have NOTHING FROM THEM? So they want their own rules? LET 'EM HAVE THEM!!! These two money machines are unsigned? Give them what they want, but GET THEM BACK!!!"

I'm sure you can observe that I lean towards the latter.

Where did I get the rep of wanting my own way all the time? Companies/editors hire me to do a job, and I assume they want me to do the job, not to hand in raw material.

Interesting about your beard, JB. I have actually, after years of always shaving it, only recently started letting the area of my lower lip start growing. Still feels a little weird.

Man. Seeing you two together makes me want a book by the two of you together.

Also, we've seen instances of Walt inking JB, but has JB ever inked Walt?

Mr. Byrne, you misunderstand me. As memory serves, you want to tell your stories without company wide crossovers interfering with them, and you want to discuss when someone else uses "your" characters. Not that you demand your way all the time. You seem a reasonable and sober gent here - but I know you've left books because of too much interference.

If I misunderstood that, it's a fault on my part and I apologize; I have long inferred that you're a fair gentleman.

JB,

So, how was your NYCC experience this year? (illness aside- hope you're feeling better, BTW)

I was at NYCC for Saturday only, and sadly, my signing times at my publisher's booth--right next to IDW's!--seemed to line up exactly with JB's. Augh!

Maybe next year.

Any chance you'd ever attend a west coast show like the San Diego Comic-Con? I was sorry that you didn't get to pick up your Will Eisner Hall of Fame Award in person.

How about Orlando next year?

I thought I remember some talk about teaming up will William Shatner at Mega-con in 2020.
